A male reader, wiseoldman United Kingdom +, writes (21 June 2012):

Paedophilia is not necessarily simply having sex with an underage person, it is the perversion of being attracted to a child's body, that is, someone who is too young to have reached the age of puberty. The fact that you, a sixteen year old boy, are attracted to what is presumably a normally-shaped fifteen year old girl does NOT make you a paedophile. That being said, get to know her and wait until she's of legal age before going any further. And most important, make sure she feels the same way about you.

A male reader, no nonsense Aidan United Kingdom +, writes (20 June 2012):

As others have rightly said, the age of consent is 16 which would make sex with this girl illegal. Actually, this gives you both a great excuse to really get to know each other first whilst sex is off the cards. You can date her, the prohibition on sex doesn’t have to be a disaster. We hear too often of people who jump in to bed so quickly that they’ve not even built a relationship yet. I should point out though that paedophilia isn’t something you should be thinking about. Sex with this girl wouldn’t make you a paedophile, that’s a specific term for a much older person abusing a child. I think the word literally means a person engaged in sexual activity with a child who hasn’t gone through puberty yet, but has come to be used to describe any adult who engages in sexual activity with a child, that is a person not yet at the age of consent. But in this case, you’re a child too, according to law. When there’s only a maximum of a year’s difference in your age and the age of this girl, there’s no way that you could be considered a paedophile. The only reason why you must avoid sex with a 15 year-old, in legal terms, is that she’s below the age of consent. In reality, age of consent restrictions always throw up grey areas: people point out that, for example, with an age difference as small as yours there are no differences in maturity, or that some 17 year-olds who can legally have sex are less mature than some 15 year-olds who can’t. Still others think that the law doesn’t distinguish enough between people like you who might have sex with a 15 year-old, and people who have sex with children so young that they’re clearly unable to consent. But whatever anyone’s opinion of the law, and however frustrating any individual might find it, we have to stick with it. It sounds like you’re very aware of this in your post, it’s a shame other young people are less conscientious, but you’re doing the right thing playing by the book. And, like I said, this isn’t a disaster and doesn’t mean there’s no future with this girl, so if you’re keen on her why not ask her out and give it a go.

I wish you all the very best.

Here's the deal OP http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/advice/factfile_az/age_of_consent

Now the way it works is you're a guy so you'll be screwed if you have sex with an underage girl whereas girls who have sex with underage boys are not treated the same way, legally we guys are more evil than girls or girls are incapable of being responsible for their actions or something.

For example in Ireland the age of consent is 17, if two 16 year olds have sex then only the boy is at fault and the girl gets off scott free and can't be held legally responsible because they can get pregnant. Seriously messed up situation really, basically legally in Ireland teenage girls are incapable of being responsible for their actions when it comes to sex.

For your information OP, any sexual contact, groping her boobs etc. is also very illegal and while not as serious as statutory rape will get you put on the offenders register and some jail time.

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (19 June 2012):

aunt honesty agony auntThe age of consent in the UK is 16. So unless you want to break the law you would need to wait until this girl was 16 before you engaged in any sort of sexual relationship with her. This does not mean you can't date her just now. It just means that you would need to wait before taking it further.

If it where to be a case that you had sexual relations with this girl and someone found out about it then yes you would be facing charges on sexual assault. If the girl is over the age of 13 and under 16 then the person that has sex with her could go to prison for up to two years.

A male reader, popeye_loves-cuspi United Kingdom +, writes (19 June 2012):

No one in the UK that is under the age of 16 can consent to sex

You can have a relationship with her yes, kissing her is not against the law, but anything that is an act of the sexual kind is against the law

Wait untill she is 16, then you both have the choice.

And can i say, its very refreshing to see someone asking this kind of question, not just going ahead and not giving a hoot to the consequences.
