Question - (3 March 2009) 11 Answers - (Newest, 7 March 2009)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey,

I'm 15 and I live in New York City. I've never been skinny. I'm a size 6. I've never understood: I have a small chest, big hips, not flat stomach, huge thighs, bad skin, frizzy/ curly hair. I just don't understand! I feel like I lucked out on any good trait that ran in my family. But the worst part about it, is living in New York and having one friend who's a model and others who are skinny too, I feel like I have extra pressure to look like a celebrity. And the thing is, I'm not happy. If I were happy with my body, I wouldn't care if I were skinny like my friends. But I seriously am not happy. Do you have any suggestions of the best way to loose weight or the best work out routines? I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thanks so much!

woah girl. 6 is small. i'm a 9 and i love the body i'm in. embrace your beauty and others will too. plus i had big frizzy hair but some product and a straightener cured that. i have terrible skin too but i used make up. guys still tend to find me attractive because of the way i carry myself. so walk with an heir of confidence and i think you'll be fine. plus, i could be wrong, but i feel like guys work off vibes and energy as well and that plays a huge role. i think the energy projects onto the physical and its a huge factor in whether they think a girl is attractive or not. and if ur concerned about other girls thinking you're attractive, well females will always try to make each other feel like crap. don't listen to them and don't compare yourself to them. just be yourself and flaunt it to the people who matter.

well first off. size 6 aint that bad and it all depends on the pants. i can wear pretty much anything from a 0-5. my hair is also curly/frizy, if you have thick hair like me you can do wat i do. i put in an anti-friz serum, then i straighten my hair layer by layer. hjt doesnt take long. also about every 4months i go to the salon and get my hair thinned out. not expensive either and it helps a ton! you should try it out! workout /w a friend, its more fun that way. and do yoga! channel 9575 veria! gud stuf!

It is more important to be healthy than be skin and bones only ... (though my friends would always say this to our genetically skinny friends: i bet you get chased by dogs a lot ... i.e. seeing bones, get it? ...LOL )

Kepi agony auntCurvy is better than skinny in any guys book :) so, don't upset yourself, you are still growing and you will find out one day that you have developed a great body, another thing to consider is not just the beauty angle, but also personality, that is another big plus as far as us guys are concerned.

Skinny girls have to deal with a whole host of problems, bad skin, hair problems, anoriexia (at the extreme) so don't even think abot going there, you don't need to, sit back and enjoy life a little more without worrying about this minor issue.

Nancie agony auntYeah a size 6 is a size 10 in the UK, and that isnt big at all. You don't have to worry about anything. I will be 15 in like 3 months and I'm a size 6 :P And I'm pretty happy with my weight lol.

But seriously, you shouldn't be comparing yourself to anyone. Be who you are and be proud of it. Guys like girls who are themselves and not complete drama queens. Don't worry!

ArmyMedic agony auntI'm a man and I like curvy girls even an American size 6 is a great size, you still have developing to do yet, any fat you do have will be what's called puppy fat and will disappear soon after puberty.

Please don't give in to the false pressures put on you. Men don't like skinny girls, we're afraid we'll break you, skinny girls have very bad skin and hair and just look so wrong.

Just eat healthily do plenty of exercise and have fun! I'm sure there's plenty of people who find you attractive, but they're just scared to approach you.

Give it time everything will work out.

Looking 'scary skinny' is a competition among girls. MOST guys think it's unattractive and want Curves.

Skeletons are in horror movies for a reason: to look scary ugly...don't fall for this hon, try to get a 'Better' bod. Go for the toned, healthy glow look. It oozes Hot. Work out doing something you love, biking? aerobic dancing? The size 0's can have their gaunt, pitiful, sickly life. YOU can have better:)

I agree with Damluvaam, that you are for sure a very Beautiful girl and a size 6 is small. I'm no size 6 but one thing I know for sure is that I look good and so do you.

Those "model" friends of yours are not perfect, a lot of smoke & mirrors might make them look that way but in the real world they're human just like everyone else.

Stop being so hard on yourself, walk with you head held high and remember you are HOT! Take care.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (3 March 2009):

k_c100 agony auntI hate the celebrity culture that we have today, especially the American celebrity culture. In the UK, being a size 6 (UK size 10) would be considered skinny! The average size of a woman here in the UK is a US size 10, and that is considered normal, and even sometimes sexy as some men like curves! But where you are unfortunately you are under some massive pressure to be extra thin when it is not healthy!

There is a lot you can do for your appearance without having to go on silly diets, as at your age they are unlikely to work. You are still growing at 15 and your body is likely to keep on changing right up until the age of 18-20. So eve if you try a diet now, it wont work as your body is on a pre-destined course to achieve its own natural weight. And you will end up doing yourself some serious damage in the long run if you diet and exercise too much, as it can damage your bones and your heart, leading to Oesteoperosis and even heart failure.

Your body doesnt sound at all bad to me; in fact it sounds womanly! And that is a good thing! Most men I have met do not like skinny girls because they look like little girls and sometimes even look like boys. Having hips and a tummy makes a woman look feminine and sexy, look at J-Lo, Beyonce and Selma Hayek. They all look amazing yet they are not super skinny or look like models.

You can sort your hair and skin out quite easily, and this should make a big difference to you. Your doctor can help with your skin - there are lots of tablets out there you can take which will make a huge difference. If you dont want to go to the doctors then there are lots of great skincare ranges that can help too, Dermalogica is my favourite (I have terrible skin!). Make sure you at least cleanse and moisturise, even though oily skin looks like it has too much moisture, it acutally still needs moisturiser to keep it healthy.

Go to your hairdressers and ask them how to tame your hair - they should be able to cut it properly and advise you on which products you should be using. Dont just give up and think that being skinny is your only answer, not eating enough will actually make your hair and skin a lot worse!

If you still feel that you hate your body and have to be skinny no matter what then it is possible you have body dysmorphia and this is very serious, you should go to the doctors and get some help for this before it turns into a serious eating disorder.

You need to accept that some people are just naturally very thin, models are a different breed (like pretty aliens!) and normal people can never ever look like them. As for celebrities, they have a team of people styling them, doing their hair, make-up etc. They dont work or go to school so they have all day to spend hours in the gym and working on their appearance, this is not achievable for normal people! The sooner you accept this the sooner you can start living your life and enjoying yourself!

I hope this helps and good luck!

A female reader, kellyxxx United Kingdom +, writes (3 March 2009):

kellyxxx agony auntYou need to accept your body firstly, a size 6 is not big, its just because you are comparing yourself with other people that you are unhappy. You can lose weight in a number of ways, healthy eating and excersing are essential. Make sure you don't follow any silly diets, all you need to remember is too cut out fast food or eat smaller portions, eat smaller portions of what you already eat if its unhealthy. Excersise a few times a week. Look on the internet for tips for a healthy lifestyle. X
