I recently found an e.mail from my husband's

receptionist displaying a photograph of a woman

who had her boobs hanging out. He said this was

a joke but why would she send this type of thing

to her boss? Do you think she's having some

kind of relationship with him or is she just

flirting?

Indeedy Birdy,

Never particularly liked the kind of jokes myself, but things have definitely changed now. Most companies have set up these policies, it stops sexual harassment, racist messages and inappropriate thing's going on in the work place. Thanks for the reminder. Jokes of this type, especially over the computer (can be easily traced) are no longer appropriate at work. It can cost you your job, and the company involved can be sued millions.....

Madam, you should point these things out to your husband. It's better he be safe than sorry. Employees can twist things and I would hate him to end up in court.

I must be getting old, I keep forgetting the world has changed and it's the 21st century now... sigh..

birdynumnums agony auntLegally, it could be considered harassment and in the US, and in the company that my husband runs, you can be fired for having naked pictures on your business computer, or sending them to others. So, it is a serious matter and not a joke. My husband's company is British and Dutch, and that is an across the board policy. Make sure that you don't participate in sending these "joke" pictures, because many companies feel the same way about this practice now. Anything that can make a person feel uncomfortable in the workplace is something that a person can sue a business for these days, and most companies are very careful about these practices. Be careful about what you surf the net for too, many companies will monitor and fire you for inappropriate use of their business computers as well.

It's a joke... hahahaha..... ladies lighten up. Sometimes work is hard and people mess around. A naked woman, not a declaration of love, it's not an affair. It's a joke...

Nope it's not funny. It's not my type of thing. But yes, for other people this is a joke and perfectly acceptable at work. By causing a fuss, or even taking it further and calling his work place, all you will show is that you lack a sense of humour. People are silly sometimes..

Did she send it to him and him only, or everyone in her email address book?

I suggest you call her and ask her what she meant by this email.

Good Luck!! xx

birdynumnums agony auntIf my husband's secretary displayed this kind of unprofessional behavior, I would not feel out-of-place in demanding that he replace his secretary, immediately, if not sooner. My husband has been hiring and firing secretaries since he was thirty, and to him, the incident that you are describing would be a breach in ethical behavior (and most of his secretaries have worked for him for 5-10 years at a time). ON THE OTHER HAND, if he doesn't immediately fire her, then he has encouraged this kind of relationship with her, and you have a problem the YOU have to deal with. In other words, if this is the case, you need to kick his butt... (I'm guessing it's the first case scenario, though...). Good Luck, Dear.

My partner has very jokey relationships with his staff who are nurses. One who is very large even got her boobs out at work as a joke. I don’t like it either because I think a boss is not a person who should encourage this, it undermines leadership and respect. I also wonder how he gets into these discussions. One told him she was considering a job as a sex line person. It may mean he flirts in a sexual way, whether or not he would do anything about it is another leap of imagination. I just know I would not encourage it myself and if a man sent me something I would be quite offended. When I asked my bloke how/why he got cross with me. I think he shoots himself in the foot as he can’t be respected much by doing that. You could consider making a complaint if there is another boss above him but he would need to agree. You need him on your side and understanding you. If he is defensive it just breeds mistrust. Also remember though that just because she sent it does not mean he asked for it. See if you can get some kindness and support from him and ask him to show you if he gets any more. Also ask him to tell her to stop and that he will be showing you in future.
