The guy I'm just starting to date may have given me strep throat. Should I tell him?

A female United States age 30-35, *a negra writes:

I have this crush on a guy who I think gave me strep throat about a month ago when we hung out. How do I tell him? What if I'm wrong? I met this guy this past summer at an event. He body painted me and we became friends on facebook and I finally got a chance to hang out with him last month. He cooked for me, we watched a movie, and didn't have sex no matter how strong the temptation was for me but just mostly kissed. Now, I don't go around kissing random people so two days after when my throat started closing, I just though I was getting a cold but the symptoms were worse and I had to go to the er and it was confirmed folks! He did get back to me that week I was sick and asked how I was and I told him I had gotten sick but didn't have the balls to tell him what it was or how bad and that he possibly gave it to me. Now before you get your panties in a wad, please google 'strep throat'. I have friends whom have told me that they have gotten it from when they were young and others told me that they were around my age when they got it and weren't kissing anybody so clearly there are other ways for it to transfer other than that. Here's the dilemma. He's invited me out again for a date. And this may not matter or make sense to some but he's a scorpio so the sexual tension is magnified times a thousand. I never kiss a guy I haven't known for more than a couple of months because that's intimate in my opinion but its like a magnet is turned on when I'm around him and if Im going to be kissing him ... Should I Tell Him??

I mean I'm all healed now but I don't want that shit again!!

My main concerns: What if it wasn't his fault and I open my big mouth, how will he look at me then?

What if I didn't even get it from him? And the bug, like my other friends, came from elsewhere, another source?

My reasoning for thinking like this: I had an ex of 4 years who I told I might have gotten a cold sore from and he went off on me! We were doing rated r things that was reasonable for me to ask plus he was my bf!He blew up and would not talk to me for a few days because he couldn't believe that I would accuse him of something like that!

So I am kinda nervous if I should tell him at all but it feels wrong not to.

What do you guys think??

So_Very_Confused agony auntoh one more thing about the antibiotics with strep and why they are so important..... it's not to get rid of the strep... that will go away by itself but, you can get rheumatic fever of the heart if you don't take the full complete course of antibiotics....

ALWAYS TAKE THE FULL TEN DAY COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS WITH STREP THROAT.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (1 December 2012):

CindyCares agony auntI would not tell him, since you are not sure your strep throat came from him. Actually, it is very improbable, since it is a bacterial infection that you can catch from microparticles of saliva in the air, e.g. , from people coughing in the bus you are riding, or at the movies etc.

It is also quite common, and , for a young healthy person, not a big deal at all ( you ended up at the E.R. for strep throat ? It must have been a whale of a strep throat !, here normally GPs won't even give you sick days for it , they'll just give you a week of antibiotics and tell you to cover your mouth if you cough ).

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (1 December 2012):

person12345 agony auntStrep is a bacterial infection. You can get it from anywhere, from doorknobs to food handlers to getting coughed on to being around children can get it. If he didn't have it while you were kissing him, it's pretty unlikely you caught it from him. Yes you CAN be asymptomatic, but it's not common at all. If you get it again he should be swabbed and tested and take some antibiotics to clear it up. Also you should be sure to finish your antibiotics completely, don't stop taking them just because you feel better.

It's not AIDS, it's just any other airborne relatively harmless (but unpleasant) illness that you can catch from being around people. You're making way too big a deal of this... Don't accuse him, just say "I had strep throat." End. I doubt he gave it to you. You probably got coughed on or caught it from a kid.

Also about mono, 9/10 people have already had mono and are immune for the rest of their lives (most kids get it and it just shows up like a cold, you probably wouldn't know if you had it). Mono risk is very low.

A female reader, Candid Cally United States +, writes (30 November 2012):

Many people are carriers of the strep throat bacteria and never exhibit symptoms.

While he may have given you strep throat, you could also get it from sharing cups, plates, or utensils and if you smoke you can get it from sharing a cigarette or pipe.

If he painted your lips with paint or brush that has been used on other people it is possible that either was contaminated with the bacteria. If the bacteria is on a moist surface, it can survive for up to two weeks.

If you were around children (whether they were sick or not) you may have caught it from one of them.

Were you tested for mononucleosis (aka epstein-barr virus aka the kissing disease)? Mono takes 4-6 weeks to cause symptoms and most people simply feel fatigued; however some develop a nasty, horrible, case of strep throat as well. I know I did when I had mono years ago.

@so very confused. Hmmm, interesting. I may have been thinking into this too much, lol. On the flip side, I'm glad its more common than I thought since I never had it before in my life but thanks.

A female reader, Honeypie United States +, writes (30 November 2012):

Honeypie agony auntNo, it's Strep, not an STD. It's a bacterial infection.

Cold sore is Herpes Simplex. BIG difference.

But you CAN tell him that you had Strep throat.

To quote a medical website:

It is usually transmitted by close contact with the saliva or nasal secretions from an infected individual, typically in the form of airborne respiratory droplets.

So it can be from kissing him, it can be because someone sneezed close enough to you or you share a drink/straw or even bit of food.

And it IS possible that he didn't know - but if he HAD it it would have showed symptoms BEFORE you got sick. Ergo if HE didn't get sick and YOU did.. you didn't get it from him.

THING is unless you live in a bubble, GERMS will get you - SPECIALLY this time of year.

I would just relax.

It sucks being sick.

So_Very_Confused agony auntOH please. it's strep throat not an STD.

When I was a child I was a carrier of strep. So was my brother. Johns Hopkins Hospital had us under study for years.

we didn't have to live in bubbles or miss school.. just get our throats cultured every week sick or not...

we passed strep back and forth to each other for so many years there were some winters my mother didn't see the light of day for staying home with sick kids.

Strep sucks. and yes it feels like razor blades on your throat. but guess what? it goes away by itself.

Thanks so much @fishdish. I never get sick, like, at all. So I panick when I do. Plus, my friends and family kept asking who I've been kissing recently which made me suspicious.

A female reader, fishdish United States +, writes (30 November 2012):

fishdish agony auntOkay. If you had mono (or a cold sore) I'd be all on board with your assumption that he had given it to you, as it is sort of known as the 'kissing disease', but strep? Strep is pretty darn common, contagious, and I don't think it's only coming from fluid exchange. So with that in mind, I wouldn't alert him to your theory that he gave it to you, and if I had recovered more than a week ago, then I wouldn't alert him about my health at this point either. I think I would definitely be put off by someone accusing me of giving them nothing more than a serious cold this past summer. Hope that helps.
