Question - (24 February 2011) 3 Answers - (Newest, 25 February 2011)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Alright so, i'm asking on behalf of my best friend, she has a boyfriend and they're very close. They were friends beforehand and they've been going out for just over a month.

Anyway the issue is that he has told her some of his secrets and he's pressuring her to do the same. But she is reluctant to do so, (she had an eating disorder and her family life is just an insane mess right now).

I was wondering if she should tell him or not? It's causing a bit of tension, she's worried he'll tell someone if they break up.

Thanks.

Thats why she should not tell him ! If hes preasuring her thats not a good sign at all, if he was a good trustworthy boyfriend he should wait until she feels ready to tell him, its a big secret

Hope this helps :)

dirtball agony auntShe shouldn't be pressured, but it would be good of her to share something she doesn't tell many people. It does help build trust, and when someone puts themself out there, it's usually good form to reciprocate on some level.

If she's worried he'll tell someone if they break up, then she needs to tell him that. It means she doesn't trust him. That's fine, as trust builds with time, but he should know where he stands too.

Aunty Honest agony auntDear Anonymous,

In a word no. While it's nice that this guy felt he could open up to your friend quite quickly it doesn't mean she's obligated to do the same. Confiding in people comes easier to some than others and being pressurized to do so isn't healthy. Tell your friend that she should wait till (and if) she becomes comfortable and trusting with this man. If he cannot accept that then I'm afraid he isn't someone to be confided in anyway.

Hope that helps
