 pet names are a personal thing so thats hard to answer.
With regards to a present, Its hard to suggest without knowing more about him.
Age?
hobbies?
price range?
has he hinted about anything?
What I do suggest is that you steer clear of teddy bears, socks, underpants, clothes (in general), and hankies.

Guys will respond differently to pet names, but I've been called typical ones (Baby, Babe, Honey, Stud) and some that aren't too typical, especially towards guys (Gorgeous, Care-Bear, Beautiful). One girl used to call me "Blue" because she'd always comment on my blue eyes.
I don't really care what I'm called, as long as its endearing, but I think a safe one is probably "Stud." Its not really a pet name, but its a good nick name that makes the guy feel good.
And gifts vary from guy to guy. Find out what he's really interested in and see if you can find a gift that's somewhat related to that.

 Honey Pet names are very very personal. I call my current partner Keeper. He calls me CRITTER which folks think is terrible.
My ex-husband’s fiancé calls him Goose... I don't see it but oh well..
I called my first husband snuggle bunnie... and he called me the same thing... it got shortened to bunny for a bit too...
as for gifts... it depends on what he likes. I could give my man a mani pedi massage day and he'd LOVE it.. most guys would balk at that... if I gave my guy seats to a football game (most guys would love this) he would HATE it….
Also how long are you together? That has bearing on it as well. And how much do you wish to spend?
