My sex drive has died, could it be the pill?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi, i lost my virginty to my boyfriend this year, it was both our first time. I went on birth control Microgn 30 two months later to help improve my periods. On these i got quite ill and moody, but i did have a good sex life with him. After 3 months on the microgn i got switched to yasmin, i didnt get no problems with this accept my sex life has appeared to go slowly down hill. It has now come to the point where im never in the mood at all. And when we even have sex i cant get aroused (or get wet), and i can never really feel anything and im constantly sore in that area when we try :/ My boyfriend is obviously feeling down about it, as we had such a good sex life only a few months ago and he feels its his fault.

Would this be because of the pill? It cant be and STI, has ive already had tests and swaps done from when we became sexually active. x

A female reader, old-spinstah United Kingdom +, writes (8 December 2009):

Go back to the doctor or contraceptive clinic to rediscuss your options. Vaginal dryness and loss of libido can both be side-effects as well as general moodiness and depression. You may want to try yet another brand of pill or think about one of the other hormonal methods of contraception. The injection and the implant, for example, contain much smaller doses of certain hormones and therefore may have fewer side-effects.

You can always go back to condoms. Yeah, they might be a bit fiddly etc but at least you'll both be having an enjoyable sex life.

person12345 agony auntBelieve it or not this is a really common problem with birth control pills. I had this too until I switched brands. It's just about finding the right one for you. One pill may work great for one woman but have terrible side effects for another. Just tell your doc you want to switch and don't take no for an answer if she insists that's not from the pill.

Go to a gynecologist and talk to her about the dosages of the pill. I was on 1.5/30 and then switched to 1/20, and I had these same problems. Switching back made all the difference. Obviously you might not want to go back to your original because of the side effects, but it's a good place to start the discussion. Good luck!

LilPixie agony auntIt certainly can be your pill, if you read the instructions, it should say that your sex drive can end up being higher or lower than normal.

What really interests me about this is that I too was on this and was switched onto yasmin after 2 months (same reason as you). I'm now on a different pill again, but I'm having the same problems as you, and I too have been checked for STD's.

I have told my doctor about this, but she hasn't responded to it. I'm thinking of going to see someone else about this as she's being useless.

My boyfriend is feeling down about it too and always thinks that he can't turn me on anymore as I don't seem to be able to get wet when we try to have sex.

I didn't think it would be the pill causing this problem, but having read your question, I think it'd be worth it for both of us to see a different doctor and ask about this.
