My father won't get rid of a POS oven! Should I have my friend sabotage it?

A female New Zealand age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I know this question isn't the sort of question that this website's created for, but I want some opinions on what I should do about this.

For about 16 years my family has used the same oven. At one point it was a pretty good oven, but overtime as technology has evolved, it has become outdated and annoying to use.

It never cooks anything right, the numbers on the dials have rubbed off, bit of metal fall into your cooking etc. etc.

For years now I have begged my dad to buy a new one, and he always says he will, but he's just never gotten round to it.

A couple of weeks ago I blew up because I had spent hours making a pavlova, only to have it burnt to a crisp in minutes, due to the terribleness of the oven.

My dad promised to have the oven out of there by the end of the week, and as predicted it still sits there annoying the hell out of me.

the only way to get rid of it is to sabotage it, but is this a good idea?

I have a friend who knows how to do all sorts of things with electrical gear, he can take apart a microwave and put it back together again, so I can trust that he'll be able to destroy it without electrocuting himself.

But I want to know if there is anyone way i can get it through my dads stubborn skull to get rid of the stupid thing???

It's not that we don't have enough money to buy a new one, or it has some sort of heritage to it, it's just a useless piece of crap that nobody wants to deal with.

Please help me decide whether this is a good idea.

cheers :)

R1 agony auntBad idea, sounds very dangerous. It's your dads house so it's up to him really to get furniture/appliances. Soon you will be old enough to have your own place/stuff.

You could try nagging him till he eventually gives in, finding an amazing deal on the Internet he just can't resist, cooking him burnt meals then telling him - that's what you get from an old oven...

Well I had thought it over, and I was going to buy my own oven, because as Cindy said, it isn't really my oven to destroy. But as fate would have it, it lit the curtains on fire and then the door fell off...So now there is no way my dad can put it off any longer.

Anyway, thanks :D

Maybe you could find the perfect oven in a realistic price range that's the right size and on sale. Learn about it and sell it to your dad in front of the whole family. Make it so he doesn't have to do anything except say yes and pay.

I think it's too dangerous to get someone to fiddle with it. If it's old it might even be dangerous in it's own right! We had all sorts of malfunctioning kit in our house when i was growing up and it spurs you on to independence and getting your own place!

I think you will have to persevere with the oven til your Dad decides to replace.

Check online for a used or new oven for the dimensions available or find the part numbers for the bezel and thermostat to replace them so you can see the temp numbers and the oven will heat accurately.

(Someone that has done this with an oven he bought in 1989. I bought a duplicate oven really cheap($80) for parts for an oven I had paid $ 1800 back in the day.)

CindyCares agony aunt No, of course it is a bad idea, because it is not your oven, it does not belong to you, you did not buy it. Damaging on purpose somebody's else property is a crime- even if yes, I imagine that your dad would not press charges .

It's the same as if you were asking " I really really need 50 dollars, I asked my dad but he keeps postponing, should I just pinch them out of his wallet when he is sleeping ? ".
