I used spermicide as my only form birth control (after marriage) and was able to space my three kids two years apart successfully then hubby had a vasectomy. My doctor said I was lucky because spermicide is only about 75% effective at least it was way back then ;). I never had any problems using it. Condoms and spermicide should do the trick.

I have used spermacides and have never had a reaction or found it painful in the least. It is best to use a combination contraception as you and penta suggest. Either condon and pill or condom and spermacide are both excellant ways to ensure that you dont get pregnant.

I have had a problem with spermicide. It wasn't painful, but every time I used it I had a reaction (maybe I was allergic?). I can't imaging that EVERY woman has that reaction, or it wouldn't sell as well as it does.
I think the combination of the pill and a condom (every time) is safe enough without the spermicide, though. So you can probably compromise on that one and still be safe.
