Mommy's 'Baby Girl'...how do I handle this?

A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

My 5 year old blew me away recently. She said her private area was tickling her. I let her know it is important that she can talk to me about things. I did express my concern that this should be private to her. I've noticed stuff that I don't want to notice. I may ask what she is doing, and she always says, "just scratching my belly". I'll never demand a different answer from her. This is my baby girl who is only 5. A year ago, she did tell me that sometimes she gets "bubbles" down there. I thought it was just trapped air, and when she moved it would release. I never thought twice about it. Is it possible this took a part of what is going on now? How do I handle this?

Thank you for the information and advice. It is nice to get such helpful responses. I did ask her if she has been itching, and she said yes. I am calling her doctor on Monday. I never would have thought to ask her that, and I only thought a person could get thrush in their mouth. I feel a weight has been lifted off my chest.

AGAIN THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

lilmisse2424 agony auntHey there,

There are two possibilites. Once could be that maybe she is exploring her body and learning more about her anatomy. The other could be that maybe she did thrush, and maybe why she could be scratching may lead to some sort of infection. If you think it might be an infection or something that is bothering her, I would definitely take her to a doctor and have it checked out. Good Luck!!!

when i was younger i was prone to thrush, my mum took me to the doctor and was given canesten cream which i was given by my mum when i felt a bit itchy. I was embarrassed at that age to tell my mum but i think that by talking to her then has helped me talk to her these days about problems i have with my body (i'm 21 now). Hope this helps you somehow. I caught my 2 year old stipped down naked ticking herself with a big feather once...while lying on her back. No big deal--don't make anything of it. I asked what she was doing and helped her get dressed. She said, Nothing, just tickling myself...' We went in the kitchen and made cookies and it was forgotten.

Make sure she's not doing/seeing things on TV and/or at the sitters', etc...that could prompt these curiousity's.

Otherwise, make light of it and change the subject.

Part of growing up and learning about her body, that's all.

CharmmyKitty agony auntI'm unsure of exactly what your asking, so maybe I'm thinking in the wrong direction here, but it's natural for children that age to 'explore' themselves. You've done right by telling her that she can confide in you, also that such things are 'private,' just make sure not to tell her its wrong or naughty. I don't think many of us here are child development experts, so you might want to look on a parenting website that has more professional opinions on how to react to the behavior.

But sorry if I'm totally off base!

rcn agony auntI'd take her in to get looked at. With the information you gave it could be numerious possabilities, including an infection. I know girls who sit in the bath are more prone to getting one. Especially using bubble bath. She could even be sensitive because of the brand of soap. This will cause an irritation as well.
