Losing virginity - later linked to health problems: is there truth in this ABC news article?

A male United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I am a male in my 20's and I am beginning to wonder if I have made the best choices in life or if I would regret my decisions regarding sex in the near future. I had made the choice not to have sex until the right woman appears in my life for multiple reasons and I had always assumed that this would be possible if I were still under 30 but after reading this news article I am beginning to have some doubts. This article makes very blunt and specific claims that males tend to reach their sexual peak at age 18 and that there will be significant loss of libido every year after his peak UNLESS he has sex with a partner at that age or younger.

This article also makes the SOCKING and INSIDIOUS claims that when a virgin male reaches age 20 it is questionable if he will be able to perform properly during sex and that if a guy remiands a virgin when he reaches the age of 21+ that he will be unable and physically incompetent of pleasing a female partner. OUCH!!! Despite the ''facts'' displayed in this article I have noticed only extremely moderate changes in my libido going from ballistic in my teen years to extremely high yet healthy in my twenties so far. I am generally confident in my abilities and I am use to taking slaps in the face about being a virgin at my age from society but when this information is passed as being ''scientific'' it makes me wonder if I have made the wrong choice.

A reader, anonymous, writes (2 February 2011):

Sounds ridiculous. My boyfriend didn't lose his virginity until he was 27 (I don't think he'd like me sharing that though...) but anyway...he has zero problems satisfying me and performs just fine. Does the article actually provide any evidence or sources to support this claim?

You're making the right decision. Wait until you meet that special someone and when the time comes everything will function just fine!

A reader, anonymous, writes (2 February 2011):

This is complete bull. I have an extremely Christian uncle that did not have sex until he was married at 33. He seems to be able to perform enough to have two kids.

However, there have been studies performed that state that sexually active men have a decreased risk for certain cancers and heart problems.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (2 February 2011):

I'm a scientist and I've never heard anything like that! I just had a look on a few scientific search engines for you and there's nothing mentioned anywhere. It's not scientific research, it's ridiculous. Don't give it another thought.

Also, I've got data on 10 000 people including the age they lost their virginity. I was bored one day and worked out the stats - 15 % of people are virgins between the ages of 22 and 25. So it's a lot more common than you might think. I guess most people just don't have the guts you do to tell their friends about their decision.

Cerberus_Raphael agony auntYou have to understand that when an article fails to support their claims with at least some amount of statements that pass as evidence, it is usually just something to fill pages and attract readers but other than that, it is useless. Half the things I read from magazines or television claiming to be 'scientific' have absolutely no merit whatsoever.

I hope that helps.

C. Grant agony auntThe media run stories like this all the time. It's sensational and it get attention, which is all the media want.

Note this line from the article:

"Our results do not allow for causal interpretations," the study authors write.

That is crucial.

If you're healthy and happy with your decision, I certainly wouldn't change anything based on something ABC ran three years ago.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (2 February 2011):

chigirl agony auntPhysically incompetent? They mean your hands, tongue and fingers stop working, and that your penis can't get erect? My boyfriend is a virgin and he's 24, and he's certainly in no way incompetent. In any way. In fact he appears to be more than competent enough and has pleased me way more than other experienced guys his age.

I don't know what that article was based on at all. But you know your own body, so you tell us: are you physically incapable of.. getting it up I suppose?

Don't you worry about this article.
