A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi I was just reading some questions about anal sex and it said that anal sex can damage you in later life. Well I have had anal sex and have been doing so for a few years. I don't do it very often - about once a month. I was wondering if I could have harmed myself and if anyone as any experience???

A reader, anonymous, writes (15 March 2010):

Folks, a lot of speculation here, a lot of story telling. If you practice anal sex carefully, use lots of lube, communicate and are gentle, you can have years of worry free anal sex. In all my years my wife has only had a few uncomfortable situations, and no major issues. When she's coming from anal she looses it completely, and I can too. Occasionally, she's suffered a minor tear that heals in 3 or 4 days. No long term health issues, she's not in diapers, no leakage...

uncutdan agony auntWow, I don't want to sound rude but everyone saying i've never experienced it but, here's my two cents worth, thats rediculous. I frequently enjoy receiving anal sex from other guys as well as dildos for 15 years. I have a large dildo that i use once a week. No joke, it is 12" long and 2 and 3/4 in diameter. I can still hold in my crap and please my partners and i have not been infected with anything. I actually feel refreshed after anal sex. So as long as you aren't getting fisted or anything extremely huge pushed up in there you will be fine. And for everyone saying you shouldn't put anything up there, you don't know what you're missing, its awesome!

A female reader, Angzw Zimbabwe +, writes (9 March 2010):

I have no personal experience but some college work I did covered some of the health problems faced by homosexuals. Besides higher risk of infection, I discovered that over time destruction of the sphincter muscle that keeps the anus closed can be a problem due to frequent dry anal sex. Be very careful. While an operation can repair the problem, you are not able to sit for a few weeks and you have to drink liquid food during the healing period. The recovery is so painful that people with this problem often wear a little stopper in the butt to stop the inadvertent release of fæces rather than have the op. Hæmorrhoids are also more common among anal sex people. The pics I saw looked like a nasty bunch of pink grapes hanging back there :-(

You doing it once a month probably won't cause eternal damage if you lubricate liberally. Use a condom always with anal.

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 March 2010):

There is a high incidence of bacterial infections in the guy of people who practice anal/oral contact.

There is a much higher incidence of Anal cancers particularly in men who have anal sex. There is a much higher incidence of Hepatitis B which can attack the liver and become fatal all through having anal sex.

Many oher STI's are more easily contracted through anal sex, most notably, HIV.

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 March 2010):

Anal sex may make a person more susceptible to bacterial infection around the anus and rectum. This is because the lining of the rectum is not as heavy as the lining of the vagina, so it is more susceptible to tears. If the anus or rectum does get torn, it does not heal as quickly. Because feces that pass through the rectum contain bacteria, any tear in the lining is at risk of getting infected. Lining tears may lead to other problems such as an anal abscess, which can make transmission of STIs and HIV more likely. This is why unprotected anal sex is often considered riskier than unprotected oral or vaginal sex.

In extreme cases, a tear in the lining can develop into a fissure (a larger tear or crack) and may extend outside of the bowel. This is called a fistula and it is a significant medical issue because it allows feces to pass outside of the bowel, and requires major surgery to repair.

Additionally, there is some suggestion that anal sex may worsen existing hemorrhoids, so you may want to carefully consider anal sex activities if you have them. Pregnancy is not a concern during anal sex (unless vaginal sex is also included on your agenda). And although you already seem aware, it is important to mention that STIs, including HIV, can be passed to or from an anal sex partner, so using condoms is always a good idea

DoubleM agony auntNo personal experience, of course, but I've heard and read that anal sex may eventually result in hemorrhoids, which makes sense to me. The anal opening is designed for something other than intercourse.

A female reader, MonksDaBomb United States +, writes (9 March 2010):

MonksDaBomb agony aunti don't know about the time period - what is considered too much - but from what I've heard, too much anal sex can lead to you loosening your sphincter (I think that's what it's called) that's supposed to keep things in. With that not tight, that means you'd have to wear pads or adult diapers, and that's not a good thing!
