Its taken him quite a while to say how he feels about me however, now he has told me he likes me I've began to lose intrest and back away. I dont know whats up with me or why Im behaving like this, if anyone could explain I would appreciate it.

 Maybe it's here just what you wanted from him.
You liked him, he didn't pay attention to you.
Once he told you that he likes you, you lost interest in him.
"why Im behaving like this" - You are looking for motivation.
It would be fair now dump him as you feel you don't love him.

 The novelty has worn off... simple! You enjoyed chatting to him at first when things were "new" but now, 6 months on it's all became a bit stagnant and boring. It happens! Let him down gently, tell him you like him as a friend but you're actually seeing someone else, that should put him off the scent.
