writes: If I do a 2-4-6 diet, for example, one day fast, the next day eat 200 cals, the next day 400 cals, the next 600 cals, and then the next fast again, and go round in this cycle would it be possible to get to size zero? With only doing small exersise, for example, 15 minutes dogwalk ect...? I am UK size 12 at the moment, so US size 8. Does this diet really work to get you skinny? You've had some great advice. I just wanted to emphasize that if you try this diet, you will actually wind up GAINING weight. Why? Because the calorie amounts you listed are a starvation level. The body recognizes this, and goes into starvation mode, reducing the metabolism so it can keep your vital organs fed. You'll wind up fainting and feeling weak that you'll eventually HAVE to end this too-low calorie intake. Then when you do, because your body is operating on 'starvation' mode, it's very efficient and it will convert those calories to fat.
So it'll have the opposite effect from what you're hoping for.
Just eat sensibly, watch your portion sizes, eliminate carbs that aren't whole grain, eliminate sugar and avoid processed foods. Then exercise sensibly. You'll lose weight healthfully and it will stay off. There are no lasting shortcuts to weightloss.

reader, anonymous, writes (28 February 2009): No, starvation is not a diet. if you stick to it you will lose weight but you may not get to size zero and there are huge adverse effects. focus on a real diet to go to a smaller size (US size 2 or 4 or 6 is still small).

You are aware that this size zero fad is based on American sizes so the actual "size zero" you are aiming for is a uk size 4.
In answer to your question if you really want to look like a crack addict / little boy and stunt your growth and give yourself an eating disorder: then yes this diet sounds great.
You'll faint and smash your nose off the floor in school, and probably lose bladder control when it happens. All the boys love a girl with a broken bent nose who wet herself in front of the whole school.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a size 12, it's perfectly healthy..If however, you want to go to a size 10 or something which is fine and nothing drastic (unlike this 2-4-6 thing) then just make sure your diet is healthy and do some exercising, maybe see if your mum/friends want to join the gym with you? 3 times a week at the gym and a healthy diet will make you feel much better about yourself and will probably make you loose just enough weight to achieve a 10.Anyway to answer the question ''is this really a size zero diet?'' i'm not 100% whether its a yes or no BUT i am 100% certain on this..it isn't good for you. They say that a female of your age and size should have between 1800 and 2000 calories a day for a reason, so having none one day and 600 3 days later will do you no good..you will feel exhausted and drained, and this will also show in your appearance.They give health guidelines for a reason.Honestly if you want to lose some weight (and it should only be some because your a healthy size now) then have a look at the amount of exercise and healthy eating you do now and improve on it.All the best :) x

reader, anonymous, writes (28 February 2009): Nope.I'm a US size 2 now, but have been as high as a US size 6 and low as US size 0, so I have some experience w/ healthful dieting.The problem with this diet is that it cuts too many calories -- your body will go into 'starvation mode' and your metabolic rate will plummet. Not something you want to do.Best way to get from US size 8 to US size 0 is to try to cut 200 calories a day from what you're eating now. Don't try to cut more than that. Easiest way to do this is to make a point of, whatever you're eating, leave three bites on the plate. Limit alcohol to no more than one or two drinks per week (lots of empty calories), and otherwise eat when you're hungry but try to make the calories count (not too much packaged, fatty foods). Throw in as many hours of walking as you can -- take the stairs instead of the elevator, and try to walk 2-3 hrs a day (combined -- need not be all at once) on weekends. I lost 30 pounds in 4 months this way, and it was a healthful approach. (I dropped weight quicker at the beginning by cutting out all sugar, which was hard for the first week, but then your sweet tooth is gone, and you don't miss it, and after a month or so, you can go back to having a bit of desert now and then.)There are much healthier, more effective ways to lose weight, and there are definitely benefits to losing weight.But I would encourage you to think very carefully about how and why you are wanting to lose weight. Often, women wrap up too much of their self-esteem in their body image, which allows them to develop an unhealthy self-image. Inclination to crash diets is an indicator of such an unhealthy self-image. In conjunction with your new lifestyle plans, please consider spending some time on your psyche, too -- strive to become the best person you can be, all around, both inside and out, and remember that wanting to continue to develop and grow and improve does not mean that you aren't wonderful as you are. Try to internalize that, and I think your overall program will be more effective.

it is a starvation diet and unless you want to lose upto 10 inches of your former height as you get older on top of getting osteoporosis by the age of 30 go ahead by all means. these arent ''risks'' as you say, there are FACTS.
a size 12 is a normal size in fact its below average with the average British woman being a size 16 now, if you honestly think that you need to go on 1 of these diets I suggest you talk to a sounsellor in your area, call the Brook Advisory Service they will be able to help you.

You will never alter how much room your bones take up, your height, how your body stores fat etc. *Consistently depriving your body of energy and nutrients is going to make your hair, skin and nails bad, mess with your periods, make you grumpy, possibly make you grow extra hair on your body, contribute to brittle bones, make your breath smell bad, rob you of energy and ultimately make you die sooner.*Restricting calories and "fasting" will result in a minor weight loss at first (mostly dehydration) but you will gain the weight back and probably extra.*The only thing that chronically overweight people all have in common is an unhealthy relationship with food - a history of dieting, in other words.*Short answer: Of course your diet is not going to work. You know what's really difficult? Being moderate and eating well, exercising and focussing on what's important in life (not dress sizes)

Your 2-4-6-diet sounds like 1-2-3-collapse to me LOL
You do know that brain and nerve cells are lined with fat molecules, to help insulate it as well astransfer electrical pulses that make your arms and your legs move, in fact, your whole body to work? These fat molecules wear out, so they need to be replaced constantly ... hence food. So why would you want to deprive them and yourself (i.e. your nerve and brain cells) from getting nutrition thus creating all kinds of things that could go wrong with your body?
Why do think why so many of skinny models have substance and drug abuse? Unless they are genetically skinny, a lot of these models actually are starving themselves .. and use drugs and alcohol to "numb" the hunger pain.
When I was your age, I could nver get into a size 0 because even though I am short (4'11", and used to weigh only 95lbs), and my bones were not sticking and I hardly had any fat layers on me .. I was still never considered "skinny" because I am what they called "big boned".. Which was kind of funny really, since I am so short LOL
If you did not like to exercise, take some dancing classes, like salsa dance. It is sooo much fun ... and you can lose fats n the right places while toning your body. You can do it at home with your friends with just watching instructional salsa dance on DVDs.
Nutrition-wise ... you are a growing teenager. You need about 1000-1500 calories a day - depending on your level of physical activities and your metabolism rate. It is better to be slim but healthy (and with a well toned body) than being skinny but a wreck :-(
The more you starve your body, the slower metabolism your body gets (which means the more fats it keeps/stores from your foods, in case it does not get any more from you). That is why a yo-yo diet not good for you. The it gets more and more difficult to lose weight, because your body "remembers" that it may not get any for a while ... :-(
Dieting is easy actually. Lots of roughage (you can eat all kinds of veg - raw - as much as you want) ... like a rabbit. Munch munch munch all the time LOL. Do not forget protein from meats and fish, you need it for your muscle mass. Every other day, or twice a week is fine. You need your carbs for its sugars etc. You need your fruits for its sugars and pro-vitamins, and roughage too. Some fruits actually act as laxative.
Consult a qualified nutritionist - I am sure there is one in your town. He/she will be sympathetic to you without sacrificing your health.
