writes:Hi, i have a child growth question for anybody who knows what they are talking about. I have a son who just turned 15 and he is around 5'7 or 5'8. I wondering if he will be fairly tall. Im only 5'9 and my wife is 4'10 but he seems tall to be our son. Could he be picking up genes from my other ancestors? He wears a 12.5 to 13 U.S. size shoe which i think is unbelievable for his age. his hands are bigger than mine and so are his feet. he has half brothers who are 6'1 and 5'11 and their mother wasn't tall. his brother thinks he'll be a 6 footer and he drinks nearly 2 1/2 gallons of milk a week. so is he possibly going to be tall? I also hear when Caucasians have children with people of other descents that the male Caucasian genes are the strongest. So i think he's becoming the perfect example.

reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2009): I remember when i was a freshman in high school (14 years old), there was a boy my age who had to be a good 6-9" shorter than me (I was about 5'8 or so). Then, after a summer vacation and we returned to school for my junior year (16 years old) I damn near didn't recognize him since he towered over me at over 6 feet tall. It was the freakiest thing I ever saw and I wondered (still do actually) if parents can actually see these kids gorwing in their sleep because we're talking this boy grew over a foot and half in about 2 months. Is it like with the Incredible Hulk, you can watch them just grow? Or do they go to bed a little boy and come downstairs a grown man or what?
Anyway, I guess I say that to say, sounds to me he may have some more growing to do. But I don't have kids, so I don't know. That said, if any parent wants to answer my question, I'd be more than happy to read the answer.

 Generations are getting taller, and your son hasn't finished growing yet, off the top of my head I think male development is complete at 21.
Just let him grow it's no big deal.

chris81 is verified as being by the original poster of the questionwell i dont think he has hit his growth spurt yet, he has what i call mini spurts where like since 6th grade (now in the 9th) he has grown 13 inches. i figure he hit a real spurt and may grow an inch or 2 and be done

 A lot of things can determine height. It could be ancestors. it could go as far as just being a product of the environment. But he could just stop growing taller for all you know.. I'm 6'0" and I was 5'11" when I was 15/16.

a) your son hasnt had his major growth spurt yet, so expect a couple more inches at least.
b) the range of his height is - your height in cm, plus his mum's height in cm(add 6.9cm to this) then divide by 2. he's likely to fall within roughly 10cm of this
c) your family doctor should have a growth chart for your son - ask to have a look if you are really curious, as your son's height will sit on a line, that can be tracked forwards in time to get his height at 18years.
d) i doubt milk features - my brother and i had our centile charts filled in when i was 9 and he was 8. they said i would be 5'6 and he would be 6'2. he drank a pint of milk everyday for lunch, whereas i hate the stuff. low and behold, 12 years later i am 5'6 and 3/4, and he is 6'1.
e) dont be an arse about his height. my dad is 5'11 and it killed him he never made it to 6'. he took this out on my brother by constantly measuring him and getting him to 'eat up', and it drove them crazy, and didnt change my brothers height 1 iota.

He is almost done growing, and yes, genetics don't stop at the mother and father. I am 5'4", and my sons dad is 6'11", and I only weigh 92 lbs (when I am not pregnant). My son was born 8lbs, 11oz, and was a long little guy. He is not 6 and is the tallest in his class! Biggest hands, feet, everything! His dad, (the tall guy) has another son who is 17, and he is already taller than his dad! It's unbelievable, really, but true. The 17 year old has a different mom, who is shorter than myself, so sure the possability of your boy being super tall is pretty good. It's not a bad thing, I'm sure he is a handsome young man, but you'll have to remind him about posture. Tall guys tend to sit, bend, stand, even walk in an akward fashion to compensate for their height. If he starts to complain about his back, send him to the chiropractor, and pay close attention to his posture (as I said before).
