Hi all,

I had my first sunbed today and had no idea what i was doing. I met a woman there and she gave me advice so was all good.

That advice was as follows:

a). Always go nude (Unless you want tan lines!)

b). Use a sunbed lotion

c). Pace yourself

I was next in line to use the sunbed after the woman. She opened the door I went in and she was naked still!!! She talked to me whilst I was in the tanning machine and made the time pass quickly which was kinda cool...

Oh and I went naked. You don't burn your penis but be warned I have a slight burn on my bottom.

I am def going to go again but doubt that woman will be there again! I guess i will leave it a week or so before I go again.

Using the bed naked was great and already I have some colour and no tan lines!!! :-)

To answer your question dude, I'm not sure if it would hurt your penis - but it's certainly not a part of the body I'd like to burn. I've been tanning naked for a while. A little trick I do is to take one of my socks and put it over my goods. I've never gotten a burn there yet!

I get in the tanning bed and i get in there nude as you call it. i'm fine. i don't see why it should hurt any part of your body. however everyone knows there are risk of skin cancer. i don't think i have ever seen a camera. If you are uncomfortable with it maybe you should were thongs or something. and also i wouldn't get into just anyones. look around for someone you know or wouldn't make u uncomfortable being undressed in there. i get in one that is at a place and my aunt manages it so it really doesn't bother me. good luck with your tan. i hope everything goes well with you.

You should be just fine if it is for a vacation a spray tan not going to do anything for you. The smart thing to do is not to burn if you are going on vaca thee spray tan is not going to protect you from the sun. Tanning at leat puts a base tan on you so you don't burn and as long as you take it slow such a starting at 6 min and go up 2 min at a time nothing bad is going to happen

Emaz help agony auntI always go on sunbeds naked and I go on them regularly. Nothing will happen unless you go on for too long then you might get burnt. I'd advise only going on for 6 minutes at the most each time.

Yes, spray tans are much safer but as long as you don't go on sunbeds constantly then it's not too bad and plus you can tell that spray tans are fake but using a sunbed people think it's real!

No I don't think they're allowed to have cameras, they do have locks on the doors too.

Always moisturise your whole body after though.

A female reader, revanchist United Kingdom +, writes (24 March 2009):

Many tanning beds do have cameras, to ensure customers do not engage in prohibited activities (e.g., masturbation, eating snacks, suicide, etc.). So you should be aware of that.

It can also harm your penis. The foreskin can dry out, eventually cracking and causing painful bleeding. Bacterial infections are also possible. Finally, as many people pointed out, it could simply burn. If you like your penis, you probably shouldn't risk its safety. And if you don't, there are far safer ways to damage it (guillotine).

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (24 March 2009):

k_c100 agony auntBasically the answer is no, it is not safe to go on a sunbed nude. Keep your underwear on and there will be a lot less problems! I know you wont want tan lines (maybe buying a thong might be an idea!) but if you are naked then the UV rays will damage the skin on your penis because this is a very sensitive part of the body - it never sees the sun therefore to expose it on a sunbed will undoubtedly burn the skin and you will be in pain for a while!

I know a lot of people on here will go on about the risk of skin cancer from sunbeds and this is very true, if you abuse sunbeds then yes you will get cancer. However if you are sensible and dont use them every week then you should be ok. So I would suggest only going on sunbeds when you have a special occasion coming up rather than using them frequently every week. Using them for a couple of weeks in the run up to an event, and then not using them again for a few months is fine and shouldnt run the risk of cancer. But if you use them 2 to 3 times a week, every week will almost certainly cause serious damage to your skin.

You should also be aware of the ageing affects on sunbeds - when you hit about 40 you will look at least 10 years older and will have skin like a wrinkled piece of leather. So dont use them frequently is the message here! And one other tip, dont use the sunbeds where you have to lay down on them, use the stand up sunbeds instead (find a salon that has these, they are more modern and more salons are getting them now). Stand up sunbeds give you more of an even tan, and the UV strips are not so close to your skin so there is slightly less damage. These types of sunbeds are much safer - you cannot get trapped in them and if a bulb breaks it wont burn your skin. They are no different in price to a normal lay down sunbed (some places charge a tiny bit more) and the only difference is you are stood up in a cylindrical shaped booth rather than laid down in something that resembles a coffin!

I hope this helps!

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 March 2009):

You should just do a simple spray on tan. Maybe if you ask they may allow you to go nude, but I really dont know if they would, I think it depends on the person and both comfortlevels. Another problem with tanning beds. If one of the bolbs break a person could get severely burned, its happened before once that I know of. Spray tans is the way to go if you decide to go on the tanning bed nude I wouldn't lay chest down. I really dout that they would have a camera in the tanning room, but you could ask them but I dout it.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 March 2009):

Well, sweetheart, according to dermatologists, THERE IS NO SAFE TAN. In fact tanning beds are probably the unsafest tan there is because the tanning rays are very intense....but because certain light waves are reduced that cause burning, the tan is not as deep as if you had acquired it from the actual sun using sunscreen to screen out the burning rays.

Sun exposure is THE ONLY thing in our free radicals that we are exposed to that cause aging of the skin. This aging is accumualtive, so it doesn't catch up to you until you are somewhere in your 40's generally, but if you tan you will have wrinkles and pigmentation problems that someone who protected their skin from the skin will not have....that is the truth. If you have experienced sunburns, melanoma is going to be a risk for you. Skin cancer is one of the most curable formas of cancer, HOWEVER, the procedure to remove skin cancers, named after the doctor who developed it called MOHL's cause's permanet scars, but the least scarring that would be possible, but you are looking at HOLES in the skin.

So will it affect your penis? If your penis is covered in skin, then the answer is YES.....so in other words, stupid question. KNOW THIS, there is no safe thing as a tan, whether you "fake bake" or get it from a day in the sun on a beach. Always wear sunscreen of 30 spf or greater (they say that the effective rate is usually half of what the sunscreen rating actually is rated) and better yet, stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time or wear clothing with a sunscree protection rating... There is not repairing sun damaged skin and it is a progressive thing...in other words, if you regulary had severe sunburns as a young child, your likelihood of contracting skin cancer as an adult is about 100 times more likely than someone who was not subjected to this kind of sun damage as a child....
