Is it more of a health factor or is there a limit on being slim?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Is it possible to be too skinny? Could it be a turn off? With being thin I am really flexible. Also, even if I feel fat I do not talk about it all the time and let my husband look at me. I just understand, because everyone always says, “You can never be too rich or too thin.” Is it more of a health factor or is there a limit on being slim?

LilPixie agony auntBesides it being unhealthy being really skinny, do you personally think that someone who is pretty much just made out of skin and bones is attractive? If not, then you already have your answer.

And like k_c100 said, your size has nothing to do with how flexible you are! I do Performing Arts at college (high school), we have all shapes and sizes in our group, some people are flexible, some aren't Last year we had a student teacher with us, she must have been at least a UK size 18 (it's only a guess but she was very big) but she was more flexibly than most of us!

k_c100 agony auntOf course there is a possibility you can become too skinny - just look at anorexics. That is not attractive now is it? When you lose too much weight your body starts eating into you fat reserves first (which you need to keep you warm and to protect your organs) and then once all the fat reserves are gone it will start eating into the muscle (hence why you see very thin people with muscle wastage around the arms, legs etc). Bear in mind that your heart is a muscle - so if you really get that thin that you are eating into muscle then heart failure is quite common.

I dont think any man would find an anorexic attractive, while some men do like thin women, there is a point that you can reach where it just looks scary - when you are too thin you end up looking like a walking skeleton with skin draped over it. That really is unattractive!

Also - when the body loses its fat reserves, because you cannot keep warm anymore your body will increase hair growth all over the body, so you will get hairy arms, legs, back....everywhere. This is to keep you warm seen as your body can no longer do that for you. Again, hairy is not attractive to men! There are so many health factors that lead to your looks suffering when you lose too much weight, read this page on the NHS website which shows you what can happen when you are anorexic

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Anorexia-nervosa/Pages/Complications.aspx

I know you may not think you are anorexic but even if you dont have an eating disorder, the outcomes of being too thin are exactly the same.

I dont understand this whole "thin and flexible" thing you are on about - anyone can be flexible regardless of size! I am a UK size 12 which would be a US 8 I think, which is definitely not skinny thank god but I am still really very flexible, this is due to dancing from a young age and kickboxing, and regular exercise. Nothing to do with how fat or thin I am!

And as for the "you can never be too rich or too thin" - this is utter nonsense and only arrogant, souless people would say something like this. And again, it is only a saying, they dont mean it literally. Because if you were literally too thin - you would die. And too rich - money does not buy you happiness and we all know that.

So ingore sayings and gossip, what really matters is that you are healthy, happy with life, and have confidence in your body shape. As long as your husband loves you and you are happy with the way you look that is all that matters. But I am sure that your husband would rather have you alive with a bit of weight on you rather than dead in the ground due to being obsessed with being thin. So just make sure you are a good weight for your height, that you are eating 3 meals a day that are balanced meals (so that means each meal should try and contain all the different food groups like fat, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, etc). If you eat well and exercise, then your health will benefit and you will look better for it - all these food groups contain vital vitamins which make your skin better, your hair in better condition and so on.

I hope this helps and good luck!

veronika agony auntBeing underweight and "too thin" is definitely a health risk. In fact, it's healthier to be a little overweight than it is to be underweight.

Skinny men are a turn off for me. I don't know what it's like from anyone else's point of view.
