MsFrankie agony auntI think that you are probably getting stressed about this and your hormones are probably playing havoc with how you are feeling. I'm sure that you will be absolutely fine and shouldn't worry too much - your periods will settle down as you get older. But I'm sure that the trip to the doctor will ease your mind - they are the experts and know what they are talking about. I'm sure they'll tell you there's nothing to worry about and give you some medication to make it more manageable.

It will take time for you to start having normal periods, I remember when I was that age, I would have the most horrible cramps that I had to lay down four a couple of hours. One thing that might help would be birth control. I take Yaz and my periods are not even painful anymore and my cycle is regulated.

A female reader, Blod United Kingdom +, writes (22 November 2009):

Blod agony auntSounds normal to me. You're only 13 so your periods aren't going to be regular for years yet. Pain and cramps are normal too. A good idea is to hold a hot water bottle against the pain, you could also take paracetamol as pain killers.

Don't worry though. This is to be expected unfortunately.

If you're really worried and the pain continues to bother you then go see a doctor. He could help you with some pain relied.

As far as I'm concerned, this is totally normally. Hope I helped. X

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (22 November 2009):

DrPsych agony auntIrregular periods are usually nothing to worry about at your age, but if it persists please see a doctor to get your hormone levels checked out. Painful periods can be very distressing indeed and some girls take the contraceptive pill to deal with the pain. You can take anti-inflammatory painkillers (but only take the dosage recommended on the packet) and a hot water bottle on your stomach will help too. Again mention the pain when you see a doctor as they can identify if there is anything that might explain this - at your age, I used to get awful pains and it wasn't until I was older that I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and a bicornuate uterus - both of which explain away the pain. I am not suggesting that you have a medical condition but if you continue to have an irregular painful cycle then please see a doctor as there maybe a simple explanation and a solution to your suffering.

A female reader, MsFrankie United Kingdom +, writes (22 November 2009):

MsFrankie agony auntHi there - it's normal to have irregular periods when you're this young but if it's painful that that's another matter. I remember I used to get really painful periods at your age and it was not fun. I would go and see your doctor (you can ask to see a lady doctor if you're more comfortable with that) and tell her about your pain. There's is a chance that she might put you on medication - possibly the contraceptive pill. This is not because you are sexually active or to stop you getting pregnant. The pill has lots of uses - it can also make your periods a lot more regular and predicable, and it can make them lighter and easier to manage. Definitely go to your doctor - she will be able to help.

A female reader, LilPixie United Kingdom +, writes (22 November 2009):

LilPixie agony auntYou're body is still getting used to being on the period, and it takes a while for them to start being regular.

I started mine when I was 10, and they didn't start being regular until i was around 14. Sometimes I'd get them twice in one month like you, sometimes I didn't get them for months on end.

This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

You've probably already tried, but a hot water bottle usually does the trick for me.
