I am in an absolute panic.

My period is 3 days late, I had protected sex (my partner wore a condom) but I keep going into a panic that it may have broken. I'm 21, and I have just started jogging for an hour a day (which I did not do before) could this have affected my cycle?

I also hear that worrying makes your cycle irregular.

My cycle is somewhat irregular, it has started on the 25th then been on the 15th, the 17th...it's very confusing!

Please please please help I cannot stop panicking over this I'm close to tears right now.

If we know which country you are in we can put you in touch with doctors who can help. Even if your not pregnant, these doctors can explain your cycle and put you in charge of your fertility.

Fiona xxx agony auntI know how you feel, I have been so paranoid in the past.

If you have been careful and used condoms each time, and no split or slip, then you should be fine.

I remember once, I was 2 weaks late, and it was all I could think about. I got a pregnancy test (for free) at the family planning.

Low and behold I got my period the next day!

lexilou agony auntYou are probably worrying more because you had sex if that makes sense. You have already stated that you are irregular and that can mean being late as well as early. Dont panic just yet. Give it at least another 7 or 8 days and if it it still hasnt happened then buy a pregnancy test. Mine are irregular and usually just when i got to really panicky oh my god stage Im really late I would buy a test, it would be negative and bugger me if my period didnt start an hour or so later. There really is no point letting it worry you until you know one way or the other, I have had many many 'false alarms' even when really i couldnt have been pregnant anyway. xx

Stayc63088 agony auntStress and strenuous frequent exercise can cause your period to be late. Also you mention you are normally irregular. Calm down! You used protection so you should be fine. There are many reasons for being late, so don't worry! If you are over 2 weeks then get a test but I'm sure you are fine. Good luck!

A male reader, CorpusDei United States +, writes (20 May 2008):

CorpusDei agony auntBoth stress and the introduction of heavy exercise can throw your period off, for some women very easily. However, if you don't get it within a few days, you'll want to go ahead and get a pregnancy test just to make sure. Most home tests are accurate beginning around two weeks from the date of possible conception. Because you and your partner were using one of the more effective means of birth control, though, it's unlikely that you're pregnant, especially if the condom was used properly.

It sounds like you would benefit greatly from getting on the pill. Talk to your doctor, ob/gyn, local community clinic, or planned parenthood center (1-800-230-PLAN) about the best oral contraceptive for you. Not only will that provide an additional means of birth control, but a lot of women find that the pill helps regulate their period and cut down on pre-menstrual symptoms.

Another thing that you might want to keep in mind, especially if you're unable to get on the pill for some reason, is to become familiar with the procedure to get the morning after pill. In the event that a condom breaks, taking the morning after pill within 24-48 hours can also prevent pregnancy. Once again, get in touch with your doctor or planned parenthood for more information. Good luck!
