Are you trying to get her pregnant? Ejaculate without protection.

If you are trying to avoid pregnancy you have to weigh the momentary pleasure of unprotected sex against pregnancy and parenthood. Seems pretty clear to me that the risk/benefit ratio favors using protection in this case.

So_Very_Confused agony auntMaybe. Why in the world would you risk it? Do you understand how a menstrual cycle works? Here’s a wiki link for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cycle

Aside from pregnancy there are STDs to worry about. Use a condom….

Ps. Its much safer for the few days before her period than after. But guessing how many is what makes it fun!

A male reader, JustHelpinAgain Canada +, writes (16 February 2012):

You just need to google this to find the facts. If you understand the biology then you can have reasonably safe sex for a few days but it depends how regular her cycles are. If you do this it is very likely she will get pregnant eventually so you do need to be ready for surprise children.

You count from the first day of her period not the last.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 February 2012):

Can I ovulate during my period?

For women who have regular cycles, ovulating during your period is highly unlikely. Some women have very irregular cycles, maybe coming once every 3 months or 2-3 times in one month, and these women can have the odd occurrence of ovulating during a period or what is believed to be a period. Still, the chance of ovulating during a period is unlikely. But because sperm can live in the body for 3-5 days, pregnancy could occur from intercourse that takes place during a period.

Can I ovulate right after my period?

The answer to this is determined by how many days are in your cycle. For example, if you have a 21 day cycle ( from the beginning of one period to the beginning of another) and you bleed for 7 days, then yes, you could ovulate right after your period. This is because we know ovulation can occur 12-16 days before your next period begins, and this would put you ovulating at days 6-10 of your cycle.

Can I get pregnant during my period?

Pregnancy can occur from intercourse that takes place during a period. This is because sperm can live in the body for up to five days, and if a woman ovulates soon after her period, then conception could take place from intercourse that occurred during her period.

person12345 agony auntShe can, yes. You should always use protection. It's even possible to get pregnant during her period. All it takes is a slight irregularity in her cycle and she's pregnant. Always, always, always use protection.

A female reader, dr.2.be United States +, writes (16 February 2012):

dr.2.be agony auntI really all depends on the womans menstral cycle and when she ovulates. Generally speaking, (very generally) a woman ovulates on the 14th day of the cycle. The cycle begins on the first day of the menstral period and a period is generally 7 days long. So right after she stops bleeding you have about a week or less until she ovulates. Sperm can survive in the womans fallopian tubes for 2 to 3 days. If you add it up there is a chance that she could become pregnant, especially since every woman is different and our bodies generally don't follow the textbook example of the menstral cycle. She could ovulate sooner or later than day 14.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (16 February 2012):

Consult a gynecologist. Girls usually have a "safe window" in their cycles during which they can't get pregnant. But it's extremely variable. You can't tell by yourself. The gynecologist will look at her calendar and ask her questions, then will tell you if she has such a window and how long does it last.

Make sure to re-check with the gynecologist every year.

I remember the first time we found out about this. We were visiting a female gynecologist for a regular check up of my wife. She was so friendly and asked us if she could help us improve our sex life. My wife complained about birth control pills, and I complained about condoms! She said she might have the answer for us. She examined my wife's details and gave us a 3-day window and told me that I could ejaculate inside her during that time. That was awesome. I really enjoyed ejaculating inside her and she never got pregnant.

Unfortunately, after one year, the gynecologist examined my wife and said that her menstrual bahevior had changed a bit, and we didn't have the window anymore. She told us that the window could be open again in the future, but we never checked since we had decided to have a baby.

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (16 February 2012):

DoubleM agony auntWhat do you mean by "after" her menstrual cycle? If within a few days, then pregnancy is fairly unlikely, as are the few days prior. Ovulation, which is the most likely time to impregnate, usually occurs about midway between the start and end of a menstrual period. Some here say that anytime intercourse occurs, the result may be pregnancy, but the truth is that it is fairly remote just before of just after her cycle, because the available egg(s) have been released, which is what causes the bleeding.
