Just wondering if I can get some help on a sex question I have. I have heard that when a man ejaculates a lot that means he has not had sex for a while. Is this true? Thanks for reading.

Danielepew agony auntSteve S,

This is the information I received when I was a kid in Sex Ed. I have never had to worry about what happens with it. Anyway, it's my mistake. I have noticed there's less sperm coming out of Peter if you keep doing it.

With most guys the longer it has been the more they ejaculate HOWEVER everyone is different and ejaculates different amounts. Some guys might evaculate heaps even if they've recently had sex so you can't read too much into it.

Beingblack agony auntTroubledtoomuch has probably hit the nail on the head.

The amount of sperm in one ejaculation does not correlate directly with the amount of time a man has not had sex for.

I tend to produce a lot when I am highly turned on.

If I masturbate in the morning, think about sex all day, get several erections and then have sex in the evening, I'll spray about like a water wiggle.

And at times, if I haven't had sex for days, I might spurt just once or twice.

Different day, different amounts.

At times men are stranger than women.

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 June 2009):

The amount varies from man to man. It is normally about a teaspoon (about 5 ml) full based on what I have read, but some guys are less and a few are much more than that. It also does vary by how long it has been since he last ejaculated, but I have also read that it is only produced and stored for up to about 4 days. After that it is reabsorbed into the body or results in a wet dream. Not all men have wet dreams, as they are called.

It can also vary by how long the guy has been aroused and thinking about sex. If he has been thinking about sex for the entire day prior to a date and had erections throughout the day then the volume might be much greater. I know that used to be the case with me, even in my 50s. That was the case even if I had sex the night before.

So basically, I don't think you can tell how long it has been since a guy has had sex by the amount of semen. He might have not had sex for months and just masturbated that morning or he might be a guy who produces a little or a lot.

I just checked one article and it said that it can vary between 0.1 ml and 11 ml and some other articles that I have read said that the normal is between 2 and 6 ml.

Danielepew agony auntYes, it is true.

Every day, testicles produce a given amount of sperm. The amount varies from man to man. That sperm has to find a way out. If it doesn't go out in sexual intercourse, it leaves the body spontaneously at night (the so-called "wet dreams").

In many men, the amount of sperm that goes out in one ejaculation also has some relationship with the pleasure the man felt.

If a man ejaculates many times in a short period, he will ejaculate less every time. That's because the body would need to replenish the "store".

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 June 2009):

Most of the fluid in an ejaculation is produced by the prostate gland, with a much smaller proportion coming from the testicles. The first ejaculation produces a decent drop, subsequent ejaculations rather less if in fairly quick succession. Once he's 'emptied' the prostate it takes a couple of hours to recharge. That's the basics of it anyway! I don't think you can equate the number of ejaculations to the regularity of sex. Once the testicles have produced a certain amount of sperm without having an ejaculation, any 'old' surplus is dissolved into the bloodstream. Maybe I shouldn't let you into trade secrets, but if he tells you his balls will explode if he doesn't have sex he's talking b******s!
