I ask this becuase the following quote is found from the following website: http://organizations.rockbridge.net/projecthorizon/signsofabuser.htm"18. Disrespect for Women in General. Ridicules and insults women, sees women as stupid and inferior to men, tells sexist jokes ("dumb blond", "PMS" jokes). Refers to women in derogatory or non-human terms ("babe", "chick", "fox", "bitch") or as specific parts of anatomy, de-values women's accomplishments and work, acts like women are second-class citizens."My bf calls me babe all the time. I was looking up signs of abuse because I suspect he might be abusive, and I never knew "babe" was meant in a bad way? Reply to this Question Share |

I think he's just being affectionate. If he were your boss, it would be another story.

It's all in the tone. Sweet names can be as sharp as arrows depending on how they are spoken. I know when my husband says, "Listen up Sweetheart", I'm in for it. Just like when I say, "Okay Pal" he runs for cover.

He's the sweetest thing in the world.. not at all abusive toward me. Never even yells at me. It's hard to be mad at him!
But what other things do you suspect him of being abusive for?

I personally don't like being called "babe". I hate it when I go out and get called things like that, like "darling", "angel", etc. Call me oversensitive, but it makes me want to smack the guy in the nose! Even in relationships, I don't like being called "babe". I have a name, and I'd rather it was used! Maybe I'm just a bit touchy though!
I do think these terms kind of make the woman seem like an object of some sort, instead of an actual person. But then again, plenty of girls say "babe" to guys too. So it might just be a name that people use out of habit now. x

my partner refers to me as babe constantly, but he also refers to his neice as babe etc to him it is just a pet name, as it may be for your boyfriend. If he is abusive, you will know, it goes way beyond what pet name he has for you.

Doubtful. Babe is derogatory to many women, including me, and it disgusts alot of people. But most people use babe or chick simply as a pet name, just to be nice.
