A male reader, Candleman United States +, writes (22 October 2009):

Candleman agony aunt Losing weight is one of the hardest things on the planet to do. There are weight loss surgeries which are very expensive and have risk associated w/ them. They are only for people morbidly obese. Here is a link, please look at the risk involved. http://www.weightlosssurgeryinfo.com/dtcf/

Other than surgery, quick and easy is not the way it works. Beware of all the false diet claims. Most of these reflect data that factors the loss of water instead of fat early in the diet. These diets rarely work in the long term and can be dangerous to your health.

The best method of losing and keeping weight off is to change your current habits of both activity and the amount and types of food that you eat.

It works like this. Every person has a certain amount of calories that they burn during a 24 hour period. This is dependent on your age, body type and weight (this is based on the average person, not unique medical conditions.) Even when we sleep, we burn calories. When you walk 2 mph, you burn x calories every in an hour. Walk 4mph you burn more, running you burn more. Even sitting at your desk and flexing your arm up and down will burn more calories than just sitting at your desk.

The key to losing weight is eating less than you burn. It takes 3500 calories burned to lose 1 lb. The more active you become, the more calories you burn.

Your ideal goal is to from this day forward say you are going to be a new person. Be confident that you will change your life in order to meet your goals. Don't get down when you slip up. Refocus and try again.

There are programs like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers that offer easy to follow programs and meals that can help you lose weight. You can also create your own meals.

Here is a website that can help you with your diet. You add the type and quantity of food and it then tells you how many calories you consumed. It will add up your total daily calories. Then based on your activity, you can measure progress. Remember, it takes time. http://www.fitday.com/

The problem w/ our society is that we have developed bad eating habits and live lives that are not active. Look around you and all you see are fast food places or Italian pizza shops that sell crap food that is high in calories and low in nutrition. We have cheese puffs, Doritos and potatoe chips. We grow up eating this crap and become dependent on eating it. It is a hard cycle to break. You can do it though.

Best Wishes

Protein and vegetables. I don't suggest fruits because of sugar...for two weeks eleminate sugars, breads, pastas, and rice. Drink a lot of water and work out (but don't overdo it). You will lose weight fast, but it is a diet and something you won't necessarily stick with for forever. Gradually add in good carbs.

Tisha-1 agony auntThe only things I can think of are liposuction and boot camp. I think the military has a pretty strict age limit though, and unless you have some serious mounds of fat, no plastic surgeon will want to suck the fat cells out of still maturing body. I had a friend in her 30s get lipo done on her thighs... she had good looking legs, but since she didn't change her eating habits or exercise, she wound up with a fat back. Yep, the fat returned, but since there were no fat cells in her legs anymore, they went to the next place available, her back. She looked so bizarre.

Seriously, sadly, much to MY chagrin as well, there are no shortcuts. Sucks. But there it is.

Eat right. Keep moving. I would recommend going out for a sport at school. Do these things in a healthy way, and you will be that far ahead by next summer.

Good luck!
