A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey. This isn't a relationship question but I'd like some other opinions because I'm getting way too wrapped up in my worries.

I'm a geography student and this year I have the opportunity to go 'abroad' as part of my course. My choices are Wales or New Zealand. I put down New Zealand and I got it. I know I should consider myself to be very lucky but I'm more worried than excited because:

Firstly, it is going to cost me a lot. Money isn't an issue but I feel really guilty because my parents have agreed to pay for me. I'm also worried because we have to book our own flights and I don't have any good friends going. The group I was meant to book with have booked without me so I'm now worried that I'll have to travel to the other side of the world on my own. I'm also worried about being away from home and the work that I'll have to catch up on when I'm back. I'm worried about the jet lag, the activities we'll be doing, what I'll have to wear, what I need to buy, who I'll be sharing a room with, my suitcase, the food: the whole thing! I also feel guilty because my decision was very rushed. When I told people that I could go to New Zealand, everyone was like "well, you'd be a fool to go there". I based my decision on what everyone else thought because I had no idea which to choose myself. Now I'm having serious doubts and want to change my trip to Wales which I know is boring, but is so much less hassle! I feel very guilty and upset and angry with myself. I would like to go to New Zealand but preferably with people I know well like friends and family and in a much more laid-back setting. Please help me. What should I do?

New Zealand is a great country and I am jealous... if you have a pair of tickets I will take one and Dan can have one.

I'm stuck in Uruapan, Mexico.. Mexico is a beautiful country, but trust me, Uruapan sucks! I would KILL for a chance to go to NZ!!

CindyCares agony aunt Go already ! Since your parents are kindly funding the trip, all the rest you are overthinking it. Pardon me but how can you be such a wet blanket at your age ?? " Travelling to the other side of the world alone "... oh please , you'll be on a plane ! : bring a good book, watch the movie ,wear earplugs to grant yourself a good nap, and voila', you are at destination. The jet lag ? Nobody has ever died of jet lag, take some Melatonin and you'll be fine in no time. The food ?...You are kidding , you are going to English speaking ,Commonwealth New Zealand, not to eat snakes and locusts in the heart of the Amazonas jungle ! As for meeting new people and doing new stuff that you would not normally do, well, that's the beauty of it . A total change of scenery. New horizons.

Give yourself a push and spread your wings- I can see it's high time to cut those apron strings.

person12345 agony auntI would also be happy to take your tickets to New Zealand! I spent some time there as a student, mostly alone (I was with a group of people I didn't know well and couldn't stand) and had an absolute BLAST. It's the most amazing country I've ever been to and has the most beautiful scenery I've ever encountered. The food (especially the fish) is wonderful and as a whole, they are the nicest people I've ever encountered. It was probably the best time of my life to date, and was such an amazing place, I hope to move there someday. I cannot rave about NZ enough. I've been to both Wales and New Zealand and I would pick NZ in a heartbeat. Wales is wonderful too, don't get me wrong, but NZ was seriously the most amazing place I've ever been in my life. Hands down, don't even need to think about it. You will have an amazing time. Definitely bring a good camera, you're going to need it!

As for getting there, yup it's a hassle. When I went it took 45 hours of travel door to door with 4 plane transfers and was absolutely completely and totally worth it. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Don't worry too much about what to bring. Whenever you're feeling nervous about it, just remember they have stores and stuff too so if you forget anything absolutely necessary, you can buy it. Make sure you have a good raincoat and that for clothes, remember the atmosphere most places is laid back. Like, shorts and T-shirts, jeans and sneakers, that sort of thing.

If you have any questions about either country or anything, feel free to ask!

Hi,

Sorry that you are so worried about this. It is a hard choice to make and I can understand why you are worried. I live in New Zealand and you will love it here. the flight is long but you will be fine. You dont need to be so stressed about what to wear or buy... we have better shopping than Wales in my opnion! Our weather is v similar to England, the food is so much better, the people are (in my experience) more friendly and helpful. We might be a small place but we still have cities with malls etc so don't think you are going to the middle of nowhere. As a geography student you are going to have so many oppourtunities here and get to see and do so many cool things. Don't stress about this. you have made your decision... so just come here and enjoy it. I'm sure you're going to love it!

I am a USA citizen and Floridian, and I have studied abroad in Mexico twice. I had similar confusions and fears, which are normal! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, embrace it and make the most of it! I did and I have no regrets.

Don't worry. You picked the right choice, New Zealand is wayyyyyy more exciting than wales and has even more sheep! You are just a bit anxious because it's a new experience which is understandable. Stop panicking, start looking up the wild life and all the lingo that you'll be using when u become a proper kiwi!
