With some men it is just the thought of the wearer who is known to the sniffer and with other men it may just be the female smell without regard to the specific person who wore them. Inevitably, the smell is an aid to sex or masturbation in the same way as pornographic photos may be but to a sniffer, the smell is more of a turn on than a picture.
My suggestion would be to tell your girl friend how lovely her dirty knickers smell. In this way you can participate while she is with you so the practice becomes less secretive.
If you are afraid of her reactions, why not simply put your face down between her legs in a movement while you are sitting beside her and she is in a passionate mood. She may move away, or try to but you can tell her there is a nice smell on her knickers and can she let you borrow them when you are apart.
Remember, nature intends that the female smells nice between her legs so those that (say they) do not like the smell are the odd ones out and not you.

It only becomes abnormal if your sniffing dirty panties 24/7...that to me would be a tad obsessive..other then that its a fetish of yours and there is loads of men who do enjoy it.If your girlfriend doesn't mind then i dont see it being a problem.

I remember seeing one of those hidden camera programs on television once, the type where they play funny pranks on people and catch their reactions on tape. One of them was involving a really hot girl trying on bikinis (the actor) and I forget what the actual prank was about, but it was being played on a salesman in a clothing store.
When he was inside the dressing room and she was outside he started sniffing her panties... it was all caught on tape. Everybody was shocked, but at least it proves that there are other people out there who like doing it so you aren't the only one. Whether it's "normal" or not I personally have no idea, but its not something you'd want to be going around telling everybody about.
