I know be yourself is cliche but here is a reason for that. Jokes and the sort of stuff dirtball mentioned are good for icebreakers.
Once you get talking try to get a feel for the conversation, if she seems to like talking about a particular subject explore it more, if she doesn't then move on.
Best tip I can give you is learn to read conversation signs and cues.

It depends on the person and how well you already know them. Current events are usually good, so are favorite bands, shows, movies, etc. Asking her about herself is a good idea too. Nothing too invasive, but it shows an interest in her if you ask about her hobbies, friends, school, family...
