SirenaBlusera agony auntShave all of it off? It's okay to shave, but I read a magazine article where a girl wrote in asking a similar question. The magazine said to trim the hair, soak in a hot bath, and then shave (with CAUTION) with a moisture-rich shaving cream. Afterwards, they suggested, applying diaper rash medicine can reduce redness and chafing.

apathyslastkiss agony auntHey there, I know what you're going through. Though i don;t shave my pubic hair, I do shave my face and neck, and often have similar irritation.

There are a few things that you can do to reduce the irritation you're experiencing:

1) Before shaving, take a really hot bath or shower (as hot as you can stand it), and make sure that you really heat up the hair that you want to shave - this will make it easier for the razor to cut through the hair

2) Make sure that the blade you are shaving with is relatively new and still sharp. Blades dull faster than we think, especially when shaving pubic hair, as it is coarser and damages the blade more than other hair on your body

3) Make sure the blade of the razor is really hot too (as hot as you can stand it), as this will also help cut through the coarse hair. Think of it like a hot knife through butter

4) Use a shaving cream which is designed for sensitive skin and/or contains moisturizing properties

5) Moisturize. This goes in general, before you shave, but especially on the irritated skin you have now. Something with aloe in it or shea or cocoa butter should do the trick. It will help heal your skin, and keep it from drying out and getting worse.

These tips should help a lot. But even then, some people just have worse luck with shaving than others. But if you do it regularly, your skin should toughen up a bit, and get used to the regular shaving.

Hope this helps you - have a great day!

A female reader, jessica04 United States +, writes (3 April 2009):

jessica04 agony auntDon't shave quite as often. I personally only shave my bits about 1-2 times weekly, its really all I can stand.

Make sure the shower is hot. Soap up and rinse off first so you're all clean, and then use a bit of shaving cream on the out parts to help soften the hair more. Also, make sure you use a fresh razor as often as possible.

Don't shave for the next week solid. Give the skin time to calm down, it is really inflamed right now. Don't use lotions around the area either.

You might want to try resting a wash cloth soaked in hot water on the top of your pubic area, to open up the hair follicles and help reduce swelling.

Really, the best thing I have found is to give it 3-4 days in between shaves. That really works best for me.

lillymay agony aunthi,

yes!its very common.my advise would be let it grow out for a week and then either wax, which is easy if u follow the instructions.if u dont fancy that get a good hair removal cream.look it up on the internet that will tell u the best ones to use,or just go into any chemist and they are all in there.wax strips and removal creams will all be in the same area of the shops so go along and have a look and choose what u r most comfortable with.also after any hair removal u should use a moistruising cream any cream will do,coco butter is good.stops it drying out and getting sore and spotty.

happy waxing,lillymay.x

A male reader, ArmyMedic United Kingdom +, writes (3 April 2009):

ArmyMedic agony auntIt's normal and will pass with time. Make sure you shave with a clean razor, hot water and a shaving lotion for sensitive skin. Pat dry, and make sure you keep the area clean.

For the spots you have now, wash and dry as normal and you can apply some Sudocream which is often used for nappy rash and sunburn.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (3 April 2009):

That area is very sensative. You might want to try a different shaving cream, as that might be causing the reaction. Have you considered waxing instead, or maybe just letting it grow out?
