I had a comtraceptive implant in March and now I'm torn between being safe and dirty or unsafe and clean

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

First a little background info. I had the contraceptive implant back in March and the doctor did say that it would take about three months for my periods to sort themselves out. In the first couple of weeks my period was constant then stopped but now it hasn't stopped at all and it's really starting to get me down. It's not even proper blood, its brown and lumpy but the doctor did say that was normal.

So the main problem is when I'm with my boyfriend. We've been together for 14 months and for three months we couldn't do anything because of me being on all the time. So two weeks back he told me that he didn't care about me being on and that he loves me all the same and we got back to doing stuff again. But everytime when we foreplay and when he stops and I see the mess on his hand it really turns me sick and makes me feel really ugly and dirty, but he tells me it's fine even though I think he secretly hates me for it.

So what do I do now? The reason for getting the implant was that I was safe from getting pregnant but what's the use of it if I can't even do anything?

I'm torn between being safe and dirty or unsafe and clean.

Please please please help, any advide is well appreciated!

Twirly agony auntHi Lovely,

I have just had the comtraceptive implant removed after 2 years, I didn't have the problems you are having but decided it wasn't for me in the end.

like some of the other posters have already said, you could really do to try something else.

I would not try the depo injection personally, as I used that method before having the implant and it really did mess up my periods so in the light of what your reaction to the implant has been, I wouldn't advise it.

I suggest you have the implant removed asap and chat to your doctor about trying the regular pill, explain your symptoms on the implant and perhaps try several different oral pills until yuou settle on one that works for you without all these unpleasant side effects.

I think it's unfortunately just a matter of everyone reacting differently to different dosages, it's a shame as the implant is very reliable, but i wouldn't worry too much, it's just one of those things!

Good luck! Im sure you'll find something that works great for you!

Yep I'm having exactly the same problem as you with the pill I am on.

Get yourself down to the family planning clinic and they can take out the implant and put you on the pill instead. Each type of pill is different so will affect you in different ways.

Good Luck!! xx

Fiona xxx agony auntHi Sorry to hear your troubles. I agree you might be unlucky with this kind of contraception. Which other kinds of contraception have you had or are yet to try? You could go back to the family planning clinic and discuss the issues. It does defeat the object if you cannot have sex due to it all. :(

pepper27 agony aunthi Hunny

Any kind of contraception may not agree with you, The bleeding all the time will make you tired and loosing so much blood is not healthy. So maybe you should consider getting a different form of contraception love....

Manximus agony auntI would just continue as you are for the time being hun. Your periods should start to settle anytime now. At least your boyfriend is being sensible and understanding about it all. He seems like a really genuine guy.

For sex, you can still do it, but using condoms and the like. I had the same problem when my ex wife first got the implant put in. These stresses won't last forever hun and you will both be back to normal activity soon enough.

Well done to you for thinkking about contraception though, many girls your age would take the chance. Credit to you both.

Take care

A female reader, SugarCookie United States +, writes (28 June 2008):

Try the depo instead. You have regular periods for about 6-9 months and then they stop for however long you are on the shot. You might get a little spotting when the shot is due but the shot is only once every three months. I have sex with my fiance without a condom and have never gotten pregnant in three years. Just use a condom until your period completely stops. You dont have to be unsafe and "dirty". I hope that helps!
