A good smile is all it takes! Men compose the more outgoing side of socializing and courting (and have for a long, long time). You need only get out there and demonstrate a willingness to meet and mingle.Seldom will men turn down a spontaneous conversation with a woman (believe me I know). Just say the first thing that comes to mind, and rate the reaction, 9/10 times I'm sure it will be positive. In short, be brave! Confidence and comfort in public will come with time.

hiyah, firstly well done for admitting you have a problem with confidence, shy people usually usually hide it away in hope that nobody will notice it. its normal for us all to get that feeling, even the over confident people get nervous from time to time (there just better at masking it!)
There is professional help availabe if thats the route you were thinking of going or you coud try simple exercises before you attend a social event. your not alone! its a common thing a lot of people deal with every day.
Just stay calm and mingle, your probably all feeling the same be honest about being nervous and you may be pleasntly surprised by reactions,
good luck :)
