Always always use protection. This is to avoid the agony of feeling scared , lonely and betrayed. There is no way to say how many days after period is safe or doing it during period is safe.. Have we not hear our friends say "it was an accident"? I got preg 4 days after my period! Protection! Always always protect yourself first.

Trying to dismiss all myths is impossible. If you take some advice in here, you as a woman need to get ready to mother. Have you heard of fraternal twins, triplets, etc that’s when your body releases more than one egg. Trying to predict when your ovulation cycle is very hard and it’s just an indicator of when you may release the egg. Here watch this video:

Tisha-1 agony auntThe other factor in this is how long the sperm live inside the female reproductive tract. They can live for 5 days or possibly longer! So if a few viable sperm are hanging out when an egg becomes available, well, that's a possible pregnancy right there.

birdynumnums agony auntI'm sorry - I was agreeing with chigirl; my first answer was written in response to chigirls first answer. Princess Aunty's information would only be true if every woman had a 28 day cycle - so it is a bit inaccurate as a general rule of thumb - especially the 7 days after your period part.

The only UNWAIVERING rule is that your period comes after 14 (12-16) days AFTER your ovulation. Every woman has to calculate her own dates according to the "length of her cycle". This is very important!

birdynumnums agony auntThe spontaneous release of an egg is more likely to happen with a man who isn't the mate; and that's one of the reasons why approximately an estimated 10% of children are NOT biologically the husbands! Thus opening a window of opportunity for Jerry Springer...

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (19 November 2010):

chigirl agony auntThe problem Princess Aunty is not there there aren't safe days. There are. But they are not something you should gamble on, because sometimes your cycle can change, perhaps your cycle isn't always regular, and so on. And even in the safe days I have never come across a doctor or nurse that would say those days were absolutely safe. Sometimes people get pregnant even when they technically shouldn't have been able to.

A female reader, kirra07 Canada +, writes (19 November 2010):

If the start of your period is day 1 of your cycle (and this is for a 28 day cycle), ovulation is day 14. But remember, every woman is different, cycles are different, and sperm can stay alive inside the woman for several days. So to stay the most safe, is to use some sort of protection.

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (19 November 2010):

birdynumnums agony auntThis is 100% TRUE. Even though you have a cycle, your cycle might not be a regular 28 day cycle, and regardless, you CAN release an egg spontaneously during sex! The only way to protect yourself is to use TWO forms of birth control if you don't want to get pregnant.

Excellent Birth Control Chart:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_birth_control_methods

Information on Menstrual Cycle:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cycle

ALSO - NO MATTER how long your menstrual cycle is - you always ovulate 14 (12-16) days BEFORE your period - so the length of your cycle will alter this. The egg will live for 24 hours unless conception happens. Sperm can last 5 days inside the uterus; die within about an hour in the vagina, and die very quickly outside of the body (until it dries up).

A female reader, Princess Aunty Mauritius +, writes (19 November 2010):

No i don't agree with chigirl....

You can only get pregnant after 7 days of your period and 7 days before the predicted time.

every month your body releases an egg. If there is a female egg available during the time of sexual intercourse, reproduction of a new human may occur. During intercourse the male releases millions of sperm per ejaculation into the female vagina. The sperm move from the vagina, through the female cervix, up through the uterus and into the female Fallopian tube to look for the egg. All of the sperm push up against the egg, but in most cases only one sperm will be able to enter it.

and if the egg has not been fertilised. it breaks up and flow out as blood which is your mense

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (19 November 2010):

chigirl agony auntyou can get pregnant at all times unless you wear protection or use an instrument that measures your fertile days. In either case you are not 100% protected, and there is always a risk of pregnancy when you have sex (intercourse). USE PROTECTION!
