SouthernBelle agony auntFasting for religious reasons I understand, fasting/starving yourself to lose weight I don't understand. In reality starving yourself will only cause you anguish, and take alot longer for you to lose weight. Most people try and starve themselves by eating just one small meal a day and it doesn't work that way. Anything you eat, whether it be crackers or bread your body will retain absolutely every bit of that and store it as body fat because you aren't eating and getting enough nutrients. So if you are trying to lose weight why not just eat healthy, exercise and do it the right way instead of starving yourself like an idiot, no offense.

I would say it takes about three days before you experience complications. After about three days your breath starts to smell bad cause your stomach has no food in it to counterbalance the acids and you start losing muscle mass, which is what gives you your body tone, so you'll start noticing flab right away. After about a week you start getting winded and feel extreme fatigue. You can't even walk to your class without feeling like passing out. You get dark circles under your eyes and your skin gets really chapped and dry and it starts to look pasty. That's after about a week. After about a month, you start experiencing jitters and your heart starts to flutter cause it has absolutely no nourishment to help it run. Your hair starts to fall off and you'll notice your scalp line thinning. Starvation is a awful way to go. After about two months, you start hemmoraghing cause your blood is so thin and your body so brittle that any impact on your body, even something as soft as a handshake, could cause internal bleeding and bruising.

So yeah, you could last maybe a few months living this way. Eventually, either you would dehydrate, your heart would fail or you would just hemmorhage and bleed to death.

Nutrition is important.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2008):

I think it depends on how much body fat you have. I once went 40 days without food and I was ok. I'm 5'10 and weighed about 240 when I started. I drank a lot of kool aid rather than water so that might have helped. I would caution you that if you go for that long without food when you do eat again digestion will be painful. There were times when I could almost feel the food moving thru my intestines and it hurt. Also be prepared for your body to build up a lot of fat afterward. Afterward I ended up weighing more than I did before.

Is there a particular reason you want to know?

Interestingly enought a girl about your age, weighing about nine and a half stone just posted that she lost 14 pounds last week because she was 'eating less and excersizing more'. Hm. Interesting.

You can last for weeks without food, days without water.

Of course within a day of not eating, you'll be nauseous, have headaches, and may pass out. A few days, you'll black out (not remember much), pass out, get ill, etc.

Take it from a forner anorexic/bulimic, hunny: It's a sucky ass road to even consider going down. Don't make the same mistake I did.

DoubleM agony auntAfter three days, the body will really begin to be in sad shape. Don't fast like that to lose pounds of size for more than one day, but just eat healthy and begin to include exercises, especially fast walking. And I agree with 'dearkelja" that a fair amount of water everyday is very healthy. Not too much, but at least a pint.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2008):

why don't you just try and find out. the human bod cannot last more than a week without water. not sure about how long your body can go without food. worst that happens is your body starts to consume it's own stomach and you die.

Your a fucking idiot trying to starve yourself! but hey if you want to be stupid why don't you take on the challenge you'll know when you have to start eating again cos you'll be dying.

Does lasting mean before death, or before major organ failure? And are does taking fluids count as food?

A female reader, Jargenhunter United States +, writes (23 February 2008):

It all depends on your situation. Prisoners have lasted 100 days before, but they have little activity to engage in and still intake walk and some source of salt or sugar (tea, salt water, etc). The benchmark some doctors put up is 60 days, but it deals a lot with the rest of your activity. As a 15 year old, I am guessing you lead a semi-active life and menstruate, so I would only recommend you going a few days without food. Be forewarned that a few days without food can disrupt hormones and throw your cycle off for months (incredibly inconvenient). I have fasted before for religious and other reasons, so you can safely fast for a few days, go beyond that and you will have some issues for sure.

Hope this helps!

dearkelja agony aunt3-5 days max. Remember to drink plenty of water if you are going to go without food.

I won't tell you it's bad for you since you already know this. There are religions that fast for 3 days but you MUST drink water.
