There are plenty of books and tapes regarding the subject maybe you should invest in them. You can find books on sex at barnes and nobel, on line and even at the library.

Practice, practice and more practice. You get better by doing it more, by listening to each other and by experimenting. Have fun.

I did not get what went wrong the first time.
You talk about his height but I don't know that height difference may be a problem ( I am 5'3" and my parners have all beeen 6' and more, and that was never a problem).
Anyway in general what you need to do is practice, practice, practice :) And don't be shy, tell him exactly what works for you and what not and ask him the same. You are exploring together- communication is important.

Contrary to popular belief, you can learn a lot from pornography. Don't believe everything you see mind you, but as far as positions, techniques, etc.
There are also a lot of books or articles online that could be helpful.
