When I stopped eating dairy and red meat, I hardly even noticed I was ON my period! It was a HUGE release as usually I have period pains that will make me almost pass out.

A hot water bottle is the only thing that has ever helped me. I was on the pill which has never done anything to improve my period pains. I'm now on the patch and that's not helping either. But for some people it works.
Exercise is meant to help too but for me it only makes it worse.

reader, anonymous, writes (23 June 2010): For persistent period pain, you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together, because they come from different groups of painkillers and have different modes of action. Paracetamol works on pain, while ibuprofen helps deal with inflammation, reducing soreness.
Just a word of warning: you need to pay careful attention to the dosage, because different preparations have different amounts of these drugs. Also, make sure that no other drugs you are taking contain either of these preparations (cold remedies, for instance, often contain paracetamol). Be careful!
Take:
200-400mg of ibuprofen not more frequently than every 4-6 hours, to a max of 1200mg a day, i.e. six standard 200mg tablets spaced in three doses of 2.
1000mg (2 x 500mg tablets) of paracetamol not more frequently than every 4 hours, to a max of 4000mg a day i.e. eight 500mg tablets, taken in four doses of two.
A hot water bottle also helps!
If the cramps are really bad, see a doctor. They can prescribe mefanamic acid which is an ibuprofen-type painkiller that also reduces cramping and blood loss.
Hope this helps!

I know of alot of friends who are on the pill, implant, or other hormone based birth control, who are on it purely because it apparently eases up period pains 90%... I can't personally vouch for this though as I wouldn't touch that type of contraceptive as i don't trust it not to mess up my reproductive health- that's just me though, and that's just a thought.. Maybe speak to your doctor about it? Good luck!

Take a painkiller first, then take a hot shower or bath. After that, place a heating pad on your stomach or back while drinking caffeine-free tea. Chamomile has so far worked the best. I've heard raspberry leaf tea also helps, though I've never tried it myself.
