It's not like we're real friends or something, he is just in the same class and sometimes we say something..his best friend is gay, but I know, that doesn't say anything about him..

Well... the only way to find out... is to become friends. You have to find some way to interact with him on common grounds, so to speak, at first... and then once you're friends then you can be around him in a more 1 on 1 setting. Are you in any common classes, activities, or sports? If so go up and ask if he wants to study with you, or go to a common activity (e.g. are you going to the dance, or club meeting), perhaps there's a football game or something. Or... if you know he hangs out with his friend... at some specific location... before or after school... make up some reason to 'run into them there'.
OR... as the first anonymous poster wrote... you could always approach his best friend (who's gay). Explain that you are just coming to grips with your own sexuality and that you fancy the guy and you'd like to meet him.

and to be honest I don't know how to ask him or his friend.. because I think it sounds weird to ask..

Does he know if you are gay? Also, thankfully this is your last hear of high school. That means as soon as you are done you can go to college or move to a different town and you will be able to find lots of openly gay men to pursue! I guess I am trying to say... if he is not gay do not be sad. You are so close to the best times of your life and being able to truly date. Just be safe.
Good luck.
