You could start saving money by bartering. I know it might sound old fashioned but believe me many people do it nowadays. It's not necessary, especially as a student, to buy everything brand new. You can just swap your book that you just needed for one term for one you need for your next term on sites like BarterQuest (http://www.barterquest.com).

All you have to do is keep a check of what's in your pocket or account.

If you only have $100 then only spend at most $95!

Or if you have $1000 then only spend at most about $950!! - Always leave a little in your bank or pocket as you never know when you may need it! - It is always best to have a few notes spare than be overdrawn!!

And finally - if there is something you want to buy but can't afford it - THEN DON'T BUY IT!! - Wait until next month or the month after that - as you may have saved up just the right amount!!

A reader, anonymous, writes (7 November 2010):

Lots of good advice here about getting a part-time job but here's another.

The way I saved up was to have a £100 'buffer' in my account. Whatever happened that month I could not spend any of that £100 unless it was a matter of LIFE and DEATH. The next month I added £50 to that buffer and each month I added a little more. I saved enough money to put down a deposit on a new house and furnish it in less than 2 years.

One way to cut down on those so-called 'must have' purchases you can't afford is to say "I'll get in next month when I can afford it" trust me when the next month comes around you'll realise you didn't 'need' it after all.

You can do it, if you are disciplined enough.

petina1 agony auntFind a job first then that gives you more spending power. Get a little note book and write down every outgoing that you have each week and write down money coming in. You need to get all your bills/etc out of the way first, what's left is yours to do what you like. Bills are priority, tick them off as you pay them.

A female reader, kirra07 Canada +, writes (7 November 2010):

Keep a budget. As in take a piece of paper and divide it into subcategories like bills, food, transportation, school, entertainment, etc. Then think about how much it's reasonable to be spending in those categories each month. Then write down how much you spend in those categories and don't let it exceed that much. And you can also see the pattern of your spending over the months, and see where you should be cutting back etc.

Also, don't carry cash with you. If it's really a problem, don't even carry cards with you. I don't know what you're spending your money on, but I'm in school and have trouble not buying food at school. So if you have that issue, make sure you pack enough food, including snacks. Not hungry = not likely to buy food when out.

A male reader, Griffo Australia +, writes (7 November 2010):

Griffo agony auntYou can look at your overall net income and save a mandatory 25% after all your expences such as rent, groceries, etc. For example if you earn $200 per week net then you would save $50 (25%). The rest would be yours to spend, although $200 per week you'll maybe only have $20 or $30 left.

Open another savings account that you can't access or it is more difficult to access and put the 25% into that account. after one year it will accumulate to $2600. obviously if you earn more you can save more or if you like you can reduce your expences and save a larger portion for example 50% or even 75%.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (7 November 2010):

get a part time job. You have the energy and time to do it. Add up all your income sources. First bank 10% of that income in an account you do not touch. Work out a budget. Prune out all non essential spending. Concentrate first on repaying all your debts. Take on no more debt. Revaluate your existing phone contract, can you go to prepaid phone and a cheaper plan than you have now. Go to the library rather than buy a book. Buy your clothing at a second hand charity store. Cut back on your entertainment and clothing expenses. This above may take you some time to get debt free. Go easy on presents to others. This year explain to family that due to debts you have cut back on the cost of presents. It can be great challenge to set a limit for every present and then find something under budget. Keep improving your work skills and look around for a better paying or a more responsible position. Good luck.

A reader, anonymous, writes (7 November 2010):

hey!

Try talking to your bank. For ex: If you get direct deposit have them automatically transfer a certain amount of money over from your checking into a separate savings account each month.

Then, dont order checks for the account or even an atm card, this way u wont be tempted to withdraw. Hope this helps.
