I agree. Tell him the truth. Stop accepting gifts and gently tell him you are not interested in him romantically.

First things first, stop accepting stuff from him. If he keeps buying you food and you keep accepting it, you're giving him hope. No gifts.
Make it clear to him that you're not interested in him romantically. Has he asked you out on a date? If he does,just tell him gently that you're sorry, you dont want to go down that road and you see him just as a friend. Sometimes its better to be a little blunt yet clear, than lead someone on by trying to be polite and inadvertently giving off wrong signals.
