Fairy_Lu agony auntMy cat had kittems to years ago and like all animals they do not need to be fussed over while it is happening in fact if anything they like to be left alone so please do not interfere unless she is in distress. Make sure she has a quiet corner where she can just look after them and can get to food and water easily, she might try to move them (mine liked to hide them under the wardrobe)but i advise you to take mum and kittens to the vets in about a week just so they can have a check up to make sure everything is ok.

wonderingcat agony auntYou need to take your cat to the vet. You can "guesstimate" how many kittens the mum has but I will not post here how to do it because if you are not trained to do it, you will pose a danger to the mum cat.

A female cat by nature can have as many as 8 kittens, depending on her size and fertility and health, and how long she mated with a male cat. These kittens may not be of the same age too, they may be a few days difference when conceived. So literally, some of them would be born prematurely, if born on the the same day.

And just like it could happen to a human being, a kitten (foetus) can also be in a breached position. And if not assisted by a vet (C-section), the mum cat would die.

Please have your cat sterilized after the kittens are old enough to be weaned. Or, you cannot afford to do that, then perhaps you need to your cat + kittens kept in a loving home where they can look after them better (and that includes visits to the vet)

Cats and their kittens are God's wonderful creatures too, that need caring and loving.

A reader, anonymous, writes (26 March 2009):

It can take four hours between kittens, so I would just leave her alone and she'll take care of it. She will take care of the kittens, just be sure they all seem to be breathing, they will start suckling if they haven't already and she will eat the afterbirth....she will lick the kittens behinds a lot so don't worry it is to stimulate a bowel movement because the little ones can't have it on their own.

Keep an eye on the mother for a day or two to make sure she doesn't get a fever, if she does seem lethargic take her to the vet immediately, she could have a uterine infection from not having all the afterbirth expelled from her.

She will take care of the kittens, for her she needs clean water a couple of times a day to drink and it would be best to feed her half adult cat food and half kitten food and if you have any left over by the time the kittens are weaned in about 6 weeks, you will already have enough food for them

Everyone wants to give away their kittens the minute they are weaned, but it is really best to wait a minimum of 8 weeks preferably 10 weeks to adopt them out. Kittens learn important skills like litter training from their mothers as well as other things imortant to bein a cat, and the kittens will be old enough to adjust to a new home and not risk injury from the move etc....it is really best to wait till they are old enough to give them out....they will be healthier and get more nutrients from the mom, too because she will continue to feed them off and on up until about the 10 week mark, so don't get in a hurry.

I hope you will then have your cat spayed, as there are too many unwanted animals in the world today and you don't need to be contributing to the overpopulation of animals. Your cat can go into heat again the minute she gets her kittens weaned....so be sure and pay for that vet bill.

CrazyMind agony auntPut simply.... it depends how many kittens she had inside her!

It may depend on the breed etc., but I'm not cat expert.

According to http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070227080409AAFbOLC , the average is around 4.

I'd say do a search for it on [Insert name of popular search engine here] - also remember to look up how to best care for kittens, what you should and shouldn't do, etc.

A quick search has given me this site: http://kittencare.com/

It may be worth looking around though.
