A female age 41-50, anonymous writes:

It is a spiritual question, and I hope I can get some opinion. I'm not a religious person on this point, but I wish to reach out for some spiritual answers and help. It is difficult ,as I can't pray to a God I don;t believe in on this point. I wish to , but it didn't happen yet...

So I'm trying to meditate, but without some solid fantasy ,whose help I'm asking, it is becoming confusing for myself. Like i say, I'm asking the divine, or the universe, etc. Means empty words to me on this point. So my question is, until i don't believe in a higher power, do i have any chance to be spiritual, and get inner peace, from meditation etc. There is a confusing trend,of new age , and its full of the words divine and universe etc. But what do they really mean without pointing at God,or other higher power? So ,if you are ''just by yourself"" can you still find inner calmness of your heart? What can a non religious person say to himself about the soul? Don't think I have anything against religion, it's just not something I can truly believe in on this point. I do want to be spiritual ,because I see people can have more peace when they have faith. I just have so much problem with this. I 'm more of an agnostic, not an atheist. So how should I find inner peace, with no God?thaks

HonningKanin agony auntHi!

I know this is old, but I felt kinda compeled to answer. I am an Atheist and I personally find my inner peace by refelcting in on myself through meditation, through trying to better myself and through helping others. While meditating I try to calm and centre myself into thinking of basically nothing and then envision where in my life I am and where it is I want to go. I trust myself to not freak out when things go wrong and try to work with what life throws at me. I try to expect I will get unexpected things so when I do I am not fully surprised by them. Bettering myself can take on several forms from trying to stay in shape or taking on more educational reading material and helping others is a bit obvious. Any act of kindness to a stranger or to a friend because I want to and care gives me a great sense of calm because I feel the world is that bit warmer to live in.

Personally if you can rely on yourself and are comfortable and secure with yourself and you reinforce this, you will not be an easy person to break down.

Easier way to find inner peace.. pick up a good book on meditation, follow the instructions and learn to empty your mind and stop thinking about anything at all... or find yourself a hobby that takes up all your energy and focus, and doesn't allow you to think of anything except what you are doing at the time. To find inner peace, you first need to learn to turn off your questioning mind, and just do and become, rather than think and reason.

A reader, anonymous, writes (29 December 2008):

What a brilliant question, especially at this season, when the old year is nearly finished and the new year is nearly here... First I must declare that I am an atheist, this will hopefully put my answers into context...

Inner peace without God... lol.. Yes it's possible it's very possible. Prayer and meditation are very nearly the same thing, it's just that they concentrate on different things. I'm a fan of Douglas Adams, a funny science fiction writer, and some of the things he has to say, I think may be useful to you.

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space." Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.... Sit down in a very quite space, somewhere green and close to nature and just think about how large and big the universe is. Trying to comprehend the universe we are living in makes some people become religious and create themselves Gods, but gods are not necessary. Just looking at it all, staring out at the stars, thinking about how small we are and how very, very big things are, calms the soul, makes you realise how silly are your everyday troubles, your insecurities and your hangups. Space is really big, and time is really, really long. You've lived for 30-35 years, you've been unhappy, angry, frustrated and sad... some of the trees, the stars, the things around you have been around for thousands or millions of years... They've seen similar women, sitting there asking exactly the same questions that you ask... No matter what you do, it's all be done before and it will be done after you are gone. Now that how big, big is... So why worry, why fuss, why bother, just sit back and relax...After you and your troubles are gone, everything else will still be here...

Look at the animals the insects, the trees and the leaves, they don't worry, they just get on with it, they enjoy life, they relax. Why because what else is the point of life.

"There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

Douglas Adams

That's another thing, space, life, existence, the whole lot is so big, so difficult to understand, so magical, that trying to comprehend and understand only gives you a headache. It's best to start small, and that's where prayer and meditation come in. How can you understand the universe, when you don't even understand a grain of sand. Pick up a stone, a leaf, or any of the billions and billions of objects in this world. Do you understand a grain a sand, where it has come from, where it is going, how it is made, how to compare and contrast it with another piece of sand... Just thinking about a grain of sand and it's place in the world can bring you inner peace. Because a grain of sand is important, it's has a place in the world, it's difficult to destroy, it's difficult even to hold in the palm of your hand. If the grain of sand is so important, then what about you, your more complicated than a grain of sand, you can do more things, so if a grain of sand is important, you must be too...

The soul, well for me the soul is a combination of all my experiences, my thoughts my wishes, my desires, everything inside me, including my spark of life, that makes me, me, and not you. When I die, like all energies in the world, nothing can be created or lost. My body returns back to the earth, and ends up as part of other things, my soul, my energy, my life force, well that joins up with other energy forces and the universe continues again.

I need no gods, I believe that nothing can be created or destroyed, so everything is always here and has always been here, things just change and move and transform into other things. I'm here, now, me Diovanlestat, but tomorrow, maybe I'm dead, and that grain of sand you are looking at is actually a part of me. That's why it's best to love and do good. That man you hate, that person you was rude to, they may have a bit of your grandparent in them, they might be the earth under your feet one day..

Sorry, a bit of a rant, it's just that things like this are very interesting to me... Inner peace and spirituality without God, more than possible, for me it's necessary. I just look at the universe, everything around me, and am glad to be here in this human form, for the time I given to use it...

I recommend you read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it tries to explain the nature of the universe, the meaning of life and everything else, and actually comes up with an answer. It a very funny book, and you may not understand it at first, but it tries to show you that we live for living, things just are, and other than that.. well read the book and then read the book again... lol

Hi,

We see through a glass dimly in this world. The Father can only show us what we can handle :) I would start by a simple, sincere prayer to ask Him to reveal Himself (God of Israel) to you. Whenever I feel life is too much, I know He is there to help me when I ask. He doesn't leave us, but we leave Him. Take Care

A reader, anonymous, writes (29 December 2008):

It means to personally trust in Jesus..like the same way you'd trust in a parachute, if you had to jump 25,00 feet from an areoplane! You wouldn't just "beileve" in a parachute..you would put it on. In the same way the Bible say's "put on the Lord Jesus Christ"..and you WILL be saved. There are millions of people who "beleive" Jesus exists, but they have not put on THE Saviour. There is a BIG difference and the didference will be obivious when you "jump" through the door of death!!

To acknowlege what your sin is..look at the 10 commandments which are God's moral standards of goodness.. and btw know that if you'v broken 1 then you'v broken all!! so have you obeyed?? for example how many murders does it take for a person to be called a murderer..1 time right..same as a liar or thief..evan as petty as they seem..its sin and God hates sin!!

Who of us can say we all good, and/or not guilty of breaking these 10 commandments, this is what the Bible means "all have SINNED and fall short of the Glory of God."

Imagine you are in court standing in front of a judge GUILTY for mutiple serious crimes, all the evidence has been presented, and there is no doubt about your guilt!!..Your apologies and good works cannot erase your crimes, therefore you MUST be punnished..The fine for your crime is £500,000 or imprisonment, but you don't have 2p let alone £500,000. So the judge is about to pass sentence when someone you don't even know steps in and pays your fine for you!! the court accepts the money and accepts that you are FREE to go. the law has been satisfied and your debt has been paid in full..and the strangers sacrifice was a demonstration of his love for you!!...Thats what God did for YOU!!

The Bible says that the God of the universe became a man (Jesus Christ), and suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mine so that we could be set free. Its simple..we broke the Law, and Jesus paid our fine!! "God demostrated His own love for us in that while we were STILL sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8) so that we may be saved..Christ redeemed us!!

So do you see God's GREAT LOVE for you, do you see your need for His FORGIVNESS!!

So consider it today, with all your heart, turn away from sin and surrender you life to Jesus Christ. Please donn't put it off till later, you may die today and then it will be too late. You may not YET have the answers to your questions, but better to put on the parachute first, and then ask questions..than to pass thorugh the door unprepared, grasping for the parachute when its too late!!

You could pray your own prayer from the heart...somthing like this: Today i turn away from all my sins (name them)..and i put my TRUST in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Please forgive me, and grant me your gift of everlasting life. Amen...There's nothing magical about these words - it is the attitude of your heart that God cares about..i.e you have to TRULY confess with your mouth that Jesus Chirst is Lord believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead!!

God will transfom you from inside out you will think and feel differently as you learn to trust and obey Him, God will give you new strength to live right and love Him above all else. Read your Bible daily, get into a Bible teaching church.. and obey His Word. you can trust God He loves you and will always be faithful.

For more Information you can go to the www.thewayofthemaster.com

But if you've decided to reject the gift of forgivness and you die in your sins, there is no hope for you, there is no purgatory. The wrath of God abides on you and you will spend eternity in Hell!!

Please the time to read what the Bible says what Hell is like on: http://www.wayofthemaster.com/hell.html

Hi there babes. It sounds to me like you are going through a very time and this is why you are seeking peace. It is a hard place to be but to be totally honest you cannot do it out of your own strength. I am a born again Christian and was drawn to you post because of this. You are probably at a point where you feel like whoever you turn to tells you all about there spiritual beliefs and try to convince you of their beliefs. I am no exception and I am going to tell you all about Jesus Christ and hope you make the correct choice to follow his word. It is good to be open minded but try not to get diluded by it all.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace and without excepting him in your life you will not have peace.

So what does it mean to put your faith in Jesus?

A male reader, Griffo Australia +, writes (28 December 2008):

Griffo agony auntTo me the god we are taught to believe in does not really exist. I believe there is a god but the god we know is far more complex to understand than most people could really comprehend:

To me life after death exists. But only exists in an entirely new form. Our bodies are physical organic matter which can only exist in this world due to its environmental parameters. Our memories are stored in this organic body and we have friends and family based around those memories and feelings, feelings such as love, care, hate, anger etc. because they are apart of our physical body in this world. Unfortunately, we cannot take those memories with us. We can’t take anything with us.

I believe we are judged based on love. How much we love our neighbours, our friends and the people around us that we don't even know, and all the things that have and bring life to this world. I believe everything we do throughout life in this world is all connected, that if we do something bad we will have something bad return to us. If we do something kind, it will also return to us. But they won’t return the way we would like them or want them to. I believe everything is already planned each choice we make has been set and the path down each road and its choice is already known. It just depends on the wise ones (decisions) we make throughout our lives.

To me the test is love:

Some people believe love is just a feeling that should be blocked, a feeling that doesn’t need to be. But it is the most beautiful thing that exists in our world. The sad thing for those people who are lost or afraid of it have been fooled by the illusion that love is an illusion. Well its not an illusion! And it is very real. It is our test and the meaning of our existence.

I do speak to a god when in pain or at a lost for words. I have said “god please help me” when I’ve been heart broken. And god has answered me every single time. I am answered not by a magical miracle but a feeling inside that everything will be okay. I don’t speak to god that much. I believe asking to much of him is disrespectful and greedy. God put us here to experience love and life. Praying everyday is fanatical and god must be smart enough to know what we are all thinking and what we want to do. God is smarter than we all really think. So I have left it in the trust of god to allow me to live my life as god would have liked me to.

There is much more I could say here but I think you get the understanding of what I mean.

A male reader, jay12toes United States +, writes (28 December 2008):

jay12toes agony auntwe have inner peace because we believe we dont have to worry because a higher power will take care of us, inner peace can often come from feeling safe and sucure with your life. so if you can not look to a higher power then you need to look to yourself. can you believe in yourself? do you trust yourself enough to take care of your problems? and do you trust yourself to do the right thing? when you become happy with who you are and what your capable of then you could probably achieve inner peace. i feel that iv been helpful, but i cant leave without saying that i am a cristian and that i hope you find inner peace with god. im farely open minded though so i wont shove cristianity down any ones throat, but if you would like to discuss the cristian religion you can mail any questions or comments to me.

A female reader, Blue_Angel0316 United States +, writes (28 December 2008):

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntGod comes in many forms. But HE IS STILL GOD Hon. What we feel in our hearts and souls about life. The choices we make are all given to us by some higher form. Choosing to believe or not is your given right.

We all worship the God of our choice. To some it is Muhammed, to some Jesus, to others perhaps Budda. In some cultures it's nature of a waterfall, the lone or an eagle in flight. Whatever we do believe, there is definantly something MORE POWERFUL and much GREATER than WE are.

We all gain spiritual sense by meditation, which is by some considered just a quiet form of prayer. You would be surprised how many people will talk to themselves...seemingly, but it's to their Supreme Being they acutally are speaking to. For each breath we take, each new born child, for the night and day, we have miracles. It is thru our hearts and minds, our spirits grasp those feelings we need to live day to day.

When you get out of the bed in the morning, it was a miracle! You never know when it may cease! Trends teach us plenty but the thousands of years of mankind has shown us that there IS a BEING who is STILL MORE POWERFUL AND GREATER than WE WILL EVER BE ON OUR OWN.

It's ok to choose how you view religion. That is your choice. Being spiritual is a blessing on it's own but the way you choose to hold and carry it daily can be all the difference in how it is JUSTIFIED and how it DELIVERS you in your times of need.

If you wish to SEEK GOD........"I wish to but it didn't happen yet"(your words)Perhaps you should let HIS SPIRIT talk to you, and You may see the SPIRITUAL LIFE That you are secretly longing for.

Peace be with you and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Sorry I hope you aren't offened...but I Pray that My God hears you heart and opens the lines of communication so you can have your SPIRITUAL AWAKENING~

God bless,

Blue_Angel

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 December 2008):

A non religious person doesn't necessarily believe in the soul. Meditation is about finding Nirvanna , the place where everything is calm and perfect. It sounds like first of all you should decide what things you believe so then you can learn to cater for your spiritual needs after you find out what you actually believe in! It's pointless meditating and dnot knowing why!

then as a wake again i whisper one thing i am happy about or am thankfull for.

then i tel myself carpe diem and go off on my day.

this isnt any religion just my personal prefernce.

hope this helps
