A reader, anonymous, writes (6 March 2011):

You are asking for the stereotype/character traits of a person raised in a Catholic upbringing?

Let me make it clear that these are stereotypes...some of which were warranted and I noticed in people from my catholic upbringing. I'm sure it's different in different countries:

-an appreciation and fear of social hierarchy (particularly if they went to a catholic school and interacted with the religious order)

-an appreciation for rules/law

-a strong belief in analyzing the moral weight of actions (sometimes to a fault)

-a strong sense of guilt instilled by the belief in the omnipresence of god ("He's always watching and he can see inside your head") attitude. Explains why they have Confession.

-and my personal favorite: a strong ability to handle cognitive dissonance. Many of the beliefs of the church are nonsensical in secular eyes: Virgin birth, transubstantiation of bread and wine into Body of Blood, the Trinity.

If someone uses this phrase to describe themselves it tends to mean that they had an ordered, disciplined, and moral upbringing. It tends to be a positive way to describe a Catholic raised person who no longer believes.

I do have a very good Goan/Catholic friend. I found these stereotypes to much the same with her...perhaps a little more heavy on the guilt and love of hierarchy than other Catholic friends I've had.
