A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm having a bit of a problem. Each time I shower, I shave my legs and "down there" with warm water, shaving cream, all the things you are supposed to do. My legs are always silky smooth, but it seems no matter how much I try, it still feels "prickly" in my pubic area. I have tried shaving going against the hairs and also going in the same direction, but nothing seems to work! Also when I get out of the shower I am almost always cold and before I can even get out of the shower, it seems my leg hairs have grown back and then they feel prickly again! Does anyone else have this problem? What should I do? Does waxing (bikini) work and if so, how much does it hurt?

BigSis agony auntWell "A reader, anonymous,(18 March 2008)" You had me in sticthes reading your post, and at 5am that's an achievement!!

You certainly have a way with words, who ever you are, keep it up. I love it.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You want to know how much it hurts?

I have just a bikini wax and the first time I had it done, it felt like my skin was being ripped off!! I yelled some wonderful words at the beauticians that must have been heard in the next town!! Not really, I lied...hehehe, it was a split second pain, on my first visit, but that was because I didn't know what to expect. Since then it's been more bearable.

Mind you, I only have the sides done, haven't got the guts to get it all done, and as for 'right underneath' not in a million years! I know of 3 women who have had the lot off, barring the 'landing strip' and one of those ended up an out-patient at our local hospital for nearly a month! The other two managed to treat the area themselves.

If you do decide on the waxing, then make sure the person doing it for you is a fully trained and qualified waxing therapist.

The truth is, the hair grows back softer, and weeks later, so yes it does work, I never have that prickly stubble that I used to get after just one day with shaving.

DoubleM gives great advice, and having a smooth face is just as important as being smooth down there, so maybe he knows what he's talking about, hm?

A reader, anonymous, writes (18 March 2008):

I'll tell you what, I think only people who have tried it should answer. Good idea or what??!! I wonder how many men will be eligable to reply, after all their "hygiene" requirements are just the same. These men would understand the awful itch, the truly awful itch. Let me tell you, if one has half the muff one should, it feels like having a scrubbing brush in your pants by day two.

I can't think men would put themselves through such agonies (but do they?) and when i think about how they would get into all those little places they have - with the razor - the mind boggles. In fact, the vision of men waxing is rather a hoot and I am not an unkind person. Just imagine the hot wax, the paper going on and the RRRRRIIIIPP!! as the paper is pulled off. The little spots of blood on the poor goolies where the hair was ripped out of its folicles. Women get that did you know? Some men do actually do this stuff come to think of it. It is called "Back, sack and crack" treatment.

I think all these people who are so dedicated to these buffs and polishes, tweaks and rips, deserve medals. Or at least an A level for pain management. I know I am being naughty, I keep being naughty and my score on the doors are dropping faster than conkers from a tree in autumn.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (17 March 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntTo "Anonymous" who is posting an objection to men responding to this question, we don't know that you're a woman yourself, as your gender is not disclosed.

I find it a bit of a conundrum that you're objecting to a male's opinion on shaving, wherever the shaving spot might be, certainly most men shave almost everyday! And even more puzzling to me is that this site has all kinds of really explicit questions and answers about sex and relationships and you don't object to gender-mixed answers to those! Very puzzling.

If you really find hearing a man's opinion on diverse subjects objectionable, then perhaps this isn't the site for you? Just a thought. Maybe you could start up your own website just for women?

I think that the men and women here who post their opinions as agony aunts/uncles deserve some respect for trying to help answer all kinds of questions, shaving, sex, dating, marriage problems, etc.

Reread the 'about us' page on the site and think about why you seem to be upset about a man's opinion....

Hi anonymous, would you feel better if the men logged in as 'anonymous' and pretended to be a middle-aged woman? Come on, you can't really be so upset about a man giving advice about shaving?

A reader, anonymous, writes (17 March 2008):

Well, as a nurse I can tell you that shaving and damaging the hair follicles can introduce infection more than leaving things as they are. That is why people get itchy and sore. Nature has a better handle on the design and function of our bodies than we do, so sorry to say you are wrong about whiffy etc etc and hygiene. Washing regularly is all that is needed. This is a fashion issue which has come from porn, it has nothing to do with being clean. However, so are high heeled shoes fashion,so each to his or her own.

Thanks everyone! And to the anonymous person who is talking about "pedophilia"....I wanted advice, not a lecture. i am not "pressured" into shaving, I do it because I WANT to. It's my personal preferance and I don't watch porn so I really could care less what's going on there. Some women just don't like body hair and there is nothing wrong with that.

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 March 2008):

I've no need to shave my head - it got that way naturally, but to answer your point about the hygiene issue, a head does not have a hole that oozes gooey fluid with hair around it which can smell a bit whiffy, thereby contaminating said hair and the atmosphere. Trimming it does no harm whatsoever.

Trust me, a trimmed pussy can be a lot sweeter than an untrimmed one.

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 March 2008):

There is no reason whatsover to shave your pubic hair for hygiene reasons. If you bath regularly it is not relevant. You may as well shave your head for all the sense that makes. They don't even do it when you have a baby. It is the porn industry that has pushed it. It is not comfortable so why do it.

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 March 2008):

Far better to just trim here and there, if you must, to get rid of any stray 'clocksprings'.

Waxing = pain, shaving = soreness, and going against the grain even more so.

The anonymous (but registered) aunt's assumption that this is to do with paedophilia and pornography is just too ridiculous for words. I know lots of women who shave or otherwise remove pubic hair for hygiene reasons alone. And what would a man know about it? I'll tell you - I get the job regularly and I love doing a little topiary.

DoubleM agony auntNo I do not shave there, but shaved my face for about 45 years and know how to make it smooth as a plum. What the hell is the difference? Have had several girlfriends who like being shaved (because it was easier). I won't go into details, but also trimmed and sometimes groomed my ex-wife for 20 years. This "anonymous" reader is simply someone on a vendetta about me, criticizing almost anything I offer whether right, wrong or whatever. Maybe a man hating lesbian?

Tisha-1 agony auntI'm not suggesting that doubleM does this, but I think some men shave their pubic hair too, so they might have some good advice on this topic. All the aunts try to give good advice here, and you get different perspectives from people of all different backgrounds. That's what makes dearcupid tick!

You are not "supposed to do" anything at all. If it itches don't do it. It may be a trend that eminates from porn and paedophilia, so don't make yourself suffer trying to look like a porno dolly. Sorry, but I am sick of seeing the results of this pressure on women to be this way. Be yourself.

A female reader, Gena Bullock United States +, writes (14 March 2008):

Gena Bullock agony auntwaxing pulls the hair folicles beneath the skin, so you end up with silky smooth skin for weeks instead of a day or two. Try waxing, BUT have a professional do it to show you how the first time. If you can afford it, have them do it every time. IT usually lasts about six weeks and they'll do the pubic area for you as well.

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (14 March 2008):

DoubleM agony auntOkay, maybe waxing is best as "pickles" recommends, but I know that many older women usually prefer less discomfort and pain. Actually, in the last couple of years, more like a closer trim and some perimeter shaving. We are old fashioned I guess.

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (14 March 2008):

DoubleM agony auntThe smoothest possible result is to shave as mentioned, followed by additional hair removal with a very good electric shaver. Run the shaver very slowly across the shaved areas repeatedly and in various directions. You may be amazed how smooth and stubble-free it becomes, but it needs to be repeated frequently.
