A male reader, JohnR United States +, writes (21 December 2007):

JohnR agony auntUmmm, I hate to bring a bit of seriousness to this post, and maybe the poster never intented to 'really' ask this question. But, I checked the ingredients of Dr Pepper, and they seem fine. The reason I took this seriously is because Mountain Dew CAN actually have an affect on your sperm count.

You see, Mountain Dew (and other drinks, read your labels) contain Brominated Vegetable Oil. One day, drinking a Mountain Dew, I read the label, and I was 'why the heck is something called Brominated Vegetable Oil in my soda?'. The answer is to keep a consistant color in the drink, i.e. to prevent seperation of the colors in the soda. When upon investigation, BVO is on the USA FDA's watch list, and companies that use it in their product have to re-check with the FDA every 6 months to see if they can still put it in your product. You see there is strong evidence based on government studies that it 'Might' pose health risks, including cancer tendencies, fertitility issues, etc. I guess it's not conclusively proven to cause any of these side affects, and you probably would have to drink like 20 or 30 a day for years to get something, but needless to say I stopped drinking Mountain Dew.

So, yes, something you drink can actually lower your sperm count. Maybe not Dr Pepper (unless like some said, you put it between your legs, especially when the can is cold), but your question does actually have some serious basis to it.

signed, me the man with tons of information, most useless, but sometimes it pops to the top and I just spit it out :)

Many more environmental factors that can affect male fertility exist today than 50 years ago. The factors include:

endocrine disrupters

toxic pollutants

sexually transmitted infections

zinc deficiency

alcoholism

smoking

anabolic steroid use

ionising radiation.

Endocrine disrupters are chemicals present in the environment that, by virtue of their ability to adversely affect the endocrine (hormonal) system, cause health consequences. Several industrial pollutants can affect fertility, as can smoking and alcohol use. Some of these toxins can cause reproductive disorders, neurological disease, immune system disorders and cancer.

No, don't see Dr. Peppers in that list.

A male reader, SamuraiRick United States +, writes (20 December 2007):

SamuraiRick agony auntThe rumor is true!

Yes, Dr Pepper is the best birth control method. It’s the biggest secret in the world. You see the great Doctor put sperm killing enzymes into the secret Dr Pepper formula.

Amazingly he created this formula long before the invention of condoms. He prescribed the formula to married couples who wanted to maintain their sex lives without having children. The whole idea of birth control started with Dr Pepper.

Dr. Pepper also invented Coca-Cola. And we all know how big that became. The secret ingredient in Coke when it first was bring produced was Cocaine; few people know that too. But the success of Coca-Cola had led to Dr Pepper also being produced with carbonation. And it sold pretty well too. Not as big as Coke, but its still around today.

After the great mass-marketing success of what started out as a birth control formula, the great Doctor decided not to promote its benefits in destroying sperm cells, and favored selling its unique taste as refreshment.

So today very few people remember or even know about Dr Pepper's start as a birth control formula.

Personally, Dr Pepper is my birth control of choice! Who needs condoms!

Ahhemmmm.... yeh, what I just said is a load of crap.

A female reader, TasteofIndia United States +, writes (20 December 2007):

TasteofIndia agony auntAhhh, young rumors. Back in my day it was Mountain Dew that killed off sperm. No, Dr. Pepper doesn't lower your sperm count - it's soda and it's unhealthy for you because of all the empty calories, but it won't lower your sperm count.

Just a rumor, sweetness!

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 December 2007):

I think this might be true because I drank a can of Dr Pepper and then counted my sperm and there were 4 or 5 missing. I was going to count again in case I'd made a mistake but I needed to check the blades of grass in the lawn as it was a Monday.
