She's shy, and probably won't ask me out herself, so I think that I need to ask her. However, I don't know if I want to ask her out online or in person as I myself am fearful to ask her in person, but I also fear that If I ask her online I won't make the right impression to her.

Honestly it really is best to ask her out in person. I do understand it is scary. But you will make a much better impression. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

To keep this simple, in order of preference:
i) in person
ii) on the phone
iii) online
A relevant question you might want to consider when asking her out:
What are you asking her out for? *Whom* should you make it about when you go out?
Call me stupid, but at 14 years of age, I felt I wanted a girlfriend, yet I did not know the first thing about what I wanted a girlfriend for.

If you fear you will not make the right impression online I would ask her in person. Make it very light and casual so as not to spook her. Just something like, "Heh, fancy a coffee sometime?" or have a chat about a film you want to see. If she expresses interest in seeing it too, ask if she wants to go with you.
Good luck.

I'd ask her in person. No matter if she is shy or not.
