I turned 16 four months ago, and i have been with my boyfriend for 2 years. My mum has given me the ''all clear'' to go on the pill, any many of my friends are on it. There are only a couple of things im worried about. Im worried that i will put on weight, im trying my hardest to get that slim bikini body for summer, and i dont want it to be even harder than it already is. The second thing im worried about it my periods becoming irregular.

Should these things be a worry to me ?

Pleaasee Help? x

Try the NuvaRing. I was on that for years and because it delivers the hormones locally rather than all the way through the bloodstream it works with lower levels of hormones. It is just as effective though, so don't worry about that. Also, it is really nice to not have to remember it every day. You can take it out for up to two hours, so if you want to take it out for sex, you can, but unless your boyfriend is really big it won't even be an issue. I didn't gain any weight, and the best part about the nuvaring is you can skip up to two periods in a row, all you have to do is leave it in for the fourth week instead of taking it out. Of course, you should ask your doctor about all this first. Good luck.

If you're afraid of gaining weight on the pill, think about how much weight you will gain if you fall pregnant. Protect yourself; there are so many types of birth control pills that you shouldn't have a problem finding one with minimal side effects.

I have been on about 5 different types of pill and every single one of them caused weight gain, and I am not talking just a couple of kilo I am talking a hole new dress size :(

but friend of mine went on the pill she only gained about 3kilo and my sister did not gain any when she started on it, so it depends on the person.

I also got bad achne on my back and face and major headaches.

I have been on Birth Control for almost a year and I have not gained any weight. Yaz has been a good pill for me, because it takes the cravings away and my periods are much lighter than they were before. I would go see your doctor and talk with her about what pill will work best for you.

The Realist agony auntFrom what I have seen with some of my friends going on the pill they have never gained any noticable weight. I'm sure if you are exercising you won't notice. The pill will actually make your periods come regularly not irregular. There may be a time at the beginning where the bleeding is more than normal or off and on but that should not last. The worst thing that you should notice is random emotions that you won't really know where they came from.

Its better to be safe and be on it then take that chance. All they need to do now is develope a pill for guys.

x-kitycatlok-x agony auntThe pill should increase the regularity of your periods, and should also make them lighter and hurt less. That's why they prescribe the pill to people with incredibly irregular periods, or those who have such bad symptoms when they get it that it's difficult for them to carry on with normal life. As for gaining weight, very few women do. I think they just say that as a precaution. I've been on the pill for over a year now and have remained a steady weight, as have all of my friends who are on it. xx

A male reader, Bupe United Kingdom +, writes (17 March 2010):

These are normal issues to be worried about. Going on the pill is a big step for a young woman but you need not fret. You will not necessarily put on weight. Many woman do due to mild fluid retention but in terms of trying to get a slim body it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. The combined contraceptive pill is something you could ask for. If after 3 months it has any undesired weight gain affects you can stop using it. As for your last query, irregular periods are things that some people get but again you may never experience it so don't let it bother you too much. There are also ways around if you do get them, such as changing brand of pill. But for someone yet to go on the pill, my advice to you is that if you're to take this step, just go for it and see how things go.
