A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I am so tired of looking in the mirror and cringing with disgust at my reflection. There's no denying it, I look like a fat pig and it's been driving me crazy. I want to do something about it.

I've begun excercising daily and I've dramatically changed my eating habits. I used to eat certain foods out of boredom, or to medicate myself, but I am so repulsed with how I look that I can't wait any longer. I can't bear to look in the mirror anymore. I feel like I'm trapped in someone else's body.

I am so scared, though. I have read that there are some people who are unable to lose weight for various biological reasons, and I lie awake at night and worry that I'm destined to look like a fat pig for the rest of my life.

I'm worried that my age might be a factor.

I've realized that it's inevitable that I'll fail if I don't have a plan.

How do you know if you are one of those people who can't lose weight?

How do you come up with a specific plan to lose weight and tone up?

Thanks, if you can help me.

I lost 8 kgs in less than 2 months. Don't think it's impossible to lose weight. all you need is patience. There was one point of time where I used to be so angry with myself for being fat. Just like yourself. I'm sure you've heard about eating 5-6 small meals a day. This increases your metabolism rate. However, it doesn't work for everyone, and I didn't try it myself either for the fear that it won't work on me and that might cause me to put on even more weight. Well, stop eating white rice. (use brown rice instead). Drink lots of water. Cut down the portion that you normally eat by half. Don't snack. No soft drinks (coke etc). After a meal, never LAZE!! Always walk and use up the energy that you have attained in your body! This helps in digestion. When you feel like snacking, eat fruits. have heard that almonds are good. Eat about 6 almonds in the morning. Yea and don't COMPLETELY disregard your likings coz if your body gets too used to you eating this way, when you start eating normally you'll tend to put on weight. Oh and exercise. I don't do heavy exercises, no weights nothing. Just sit ups and some other minor exercises using the exercise ball. Running is a good way to burn fats so yea, hope this helps.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (30 January 2009):

k_c100 agony auntWell first of all dont believe everything you hear about biological reasons for people not being able to lose weight - generally this is just an excuse from other people who cant be bothered to lose the pounds!

Basically, scientists have proven that genetics do play a part in weight gain (so if your mum and dad are large then you will have to work extra hard). They have also found that people have a natural weight that their bodies feel comfortable at; for some people it is nice and slim, others it is bigger than they would like. If your body wants to be bigger than again you will have an uphill struggle to shift the pounds. One other finding from scientists recently is that if your mother gained a lot of weight during pregnancy then the child is more likely to be obese in later life.

All these findings do create problems for people that want to lose weight however scientists still remain convinced that despite all these problems obese people may face, it is still possible to lose the weight with lots of hardwork and determination.

I am in a very similar situation - I have around 35lbs to lose and I am sick of being the size I am, however I find it very hard to lose the weight.

But this time round something has changed for me...I've lost 6lbs in 2 weeks! And it is because I have been eating more and excersing more! The eating more is the best bit...I found because I was constantly trying to diet I wasnt eating enough calories and what I was eating was the wrong things. So my tips for you are;

1. Cut out all processed food completely! No more white bread, white pasta, ready meals (even the low fat ones!) etc... this will help with bloating and help your body to digest food properly and feel full for longer.

2. Have a big breakfast! Start the day with a big meal (around 500 calories is what I am eating) and this will help you feel full for longer and start your metabolism off correctly in the morning.

3. Cook all meals from scratch! Even when you dont have time, there are still things you can knock up pretty fast that you have cooked entirely yourself. This way, you know what you are putting into your food so there is no added fat, preservatives, colourings etc.

4. If you are excerising at night (after work is when I go to the gym), make sure you have a decent lunch that contains carbs. this will give you the energy your body needs to work out. Then have a small tea with only a tiny amount of carbs - grilled fish with a salad is a good evening meal to have.

5. Eat natural foods! Try and cut out things like margarine etc. Again, this stops any unwanted chemicals getting into your body - I have real butter on my toast in the morning and I am still losing weight!

6. Work out with weights! Dont just stick to cardio, scientists have proven that the higher your body muscle mass the higher your BMR (base metabolic rate) is. This means that your body will use up more energy just by sitting still doing nothing! So get on those weights - if you dont go to the gym then buy some free weights for home and do some stomach crunches too.

7. Dont deprive yourself! If you deprive yourself of everything you love you will only end up relapsing and having a giant binge! My favourite food is chocolate (very bad!!!) but I still alow myself tiny snack sized bars once or twice a day so I get my fix.

If you need any recipes or more tips then please message me and I will try and help as much as I can! Just remeber you can do this, it is achievable and be determined to do it!

good luck!

Plexi agony auntp.s.EVERYBODY CAN LOSE WEIGHT! Even if you have a thyroid problem you will still lose weight if you take in less calories then your body needs. How much your body needs depends on age, sex, weight and of course activity level. A 300lbs sedentary person will need to eat less then a 300lbs bodybuilder in order to maintain that weight and the less you eat and the more you exercise the more you will lose.

Plexi agony auntFirst of all changing your attitude is KEY. start telling yourself things like i can do this, i will do this, i will look fabulous because i wont stop until i look fabulous! NO IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!!! It will take time......nothing happens over night but if you are determined you will get there. Start by increasing your activity, walk everywhere instead of using transportation, take the stairs, go for walks just to see what's at the end of the street(pick a really long street by the way, lol),DUMP ALL THE JUNK YOU HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE IN THE GARBAGE RIGHT NOW! Start eating lean meats such as chicken breast and fish, lots of fruits and veggies and drink at least 12 cups of water per day. When you start feeling better you can increase your activity by going for runs or bike rides. You need to sweat!!! You only start burning fat after 20 minutes of continuous exercise so make sure that what ever activity you chose you do it for at least 30 minutes. the first 20 minutes is cardio(which is AWESOME for your hear so don't understimate its benefit. Be kinder to yourself and you will see that with the right motivation and determination you will be unstopable! BELIEVE IT- YOU WILL DO IT:)
