A reader, anonymous, writes (20 April 2007):

Thomas is a fine old name (wink), and not that common today; (Biblical and Greek, meaning "Seeker of Truth"}. The only problem, is that the kid may get stuck with "Tommy"(which I hate) into his adulthood. I also like Glenn or Glendon (Gaelic for "valley with a river running through it"). John (Sean in Gaelic) and Johnathan are strong old Biblical names. These are names passed down in my family, along with Eric (Norse, "noble"), and Duncan (Gaelic, "dark haired warrior). Kenneth is a fine old Celtic name, but suffers with Thomas in that it can become "Kenny" (another hated diminutive). Jared is a good masculine name and also Biblical. Anyway, congratulations, and I hope you agree on a name the kid came be proud of. But please, don't hang something on him that can be laughed at, just because you thought it was neat or "cute".

A female reader, NuttyGooner United Kingdom +, writes (12 March 2007):

NuttyGooner agony auntCongratulations to you!

Me myself personally, I like the names Factna, Faxon, Stephen (don't get many with that spelling anymore!), Benoit and, in particular Gerrard (I always wanted a Gerry!)

For a girl, I love the names Saiorse (Pronounced Shee-sha), Fallon, and Beryl - but my fave is Katherine, simply because is can be chopped and changed into many names as she grows up.

I like unusual names, but I don't want my child to get picked on just because of their name.

Good luck, and let us know how is goes!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2007):

Congrats to you and hope all goes well for you :)

You can never be sure of the baby's name til you see the baby I think! My heart was set on the name Neil but then after I saw the baby I changed it to Charlie - he just looked more like a Charlie than a Neil so you might have one definite name chosen but like that you may just change your mind too!!

Then again it depends on where your from - do you want to keep traditional names or family names etc?? There's so many wonderful names out there like if I ever have a girl I'm thinking of Saoirse - it means "freedom/liberty in Irish or Fionn for a boy also which means Fair headed (course if your baby is fair as well *L*

hi,congrats on having a baby boy,its an wonderful time!

names are so hard to chose, after all u have no idea what your baby will look like yet.if like myself you struggle to find that perfect name which it sounds like you are,it may just be the case of wating until hes born and the name will cime to you!Or chose a handful for there meanings and take it from there!!

i had a little boy 18mths ago and chose a crazy name like you are looking for but when my son was born chose a name for the meaning. The crazy name i chose was Jesse-james (after the cowboy)even went as far as making everything cowboy for nursery but in the end named my son Reuben the hebrew name meaning behold a son....

other names i can think of are Zeon, harrison, rufus, sheridon, alby, gio, marley.

good luck n all the best x

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (7 March 2007):

birdynumnums agony auntHi Honey!

That is such exciting news! Here's a few tips for naming babies. You should try to keep the name within the same ethnicity - for example - John Adamson and Sanjay Choudry. It's always great if you can find an interesting name (middle) from both parents or grandparents that's in both families to keep everyone happy - if possible! If the last name has multiple syllables, like Vandercamp, then keep the first name short, like John. If the last name is short, it is easier on the ears if the first name has multiple syllables, like Alexander Smith. Every decade has it's popular names, so if you want your child to sound like she was born in the 80's, name them Brittany or Crystal, and remember the name will give away their age in the future (probably more important for a girl!). There are web sites that list the most popular names for every year. You can avoid "trendy" names by giving a traditional name with a trendy short form - say James would be "Jamie" and Samual could be "Sammy". Remember that your child will have a hard time pronouncing some names for quite a while, so try to avoid tongue twisters. Although most names can be made fun of, try to put yourself in a 5th graders shoes and avoid ones that might cause your child grief in the future. AND my favorite tip - the one I always used - go out the front door, yell the name outloud down the street - if feel stupid yelling it, it might not be the right fit for you! Can you let us all know what you pick! Love babies!!!

That is a great website, Martini. I just looked at the feminine arabic names and found out the meanings of the names of two of my good friends, Fatima and Hayam. Both are muslim girls of arabic origin. Was cool to see the meanings of their name. Thanks for the link. I enjoyed seeing that. :)

I was just researching some exotic foreign names the other day for my friend's new baby, and came across this site. It's a site for arabic names for both males and females - with the name and a meaning behind it:

Take your pick: Declan, Brendan, Dylan, Quinn, Reuben, Gabe, Aidan, Samuel, Eric, Zach, Rory..all names of kids that I know! Some are nephews, some are the children of friends. I also suggest you go to a bookstore and find a book on baby names if you haven't already.
