writes: My girlfriend and I are very careful about sex so we use both condoms and birth control. She has been taking them around 9 months and I'm not sure what pills they are but we are both starting to see some negative effects. Before both control she had a period about every two months. Now its regular and lighter with less cramps so she likes it a lot. However I have noticed that when on her period she gets extremely depressed and lonely and wants to break up even. This has happened consistently for the past 6 months and even she has noticed it and tells me to ignore her about breaking up while she is on her period. I am concerned for her health at this point, anything that causes depression like that can't be healthy. Our relationship is pretty much perfect otherwise and before she took birth control she was generally happy even while on her period. I never asked her to take birth control and I told her that I would rather see her happy and not have sex than see her depressed once a month. It breaks my heart every time. What can I do to help her? And also are there any other pills out there that don't cause depression like this?

She should ask her doctor to try a different brand. I went through 3 different brands and my doctor decided that my body didn't react very well to the pill so put me on the contraceptive patch which i've been on since February now and I've not had any problems. Most women will go through different brands before they find one that works for them.

Different people are affected by different brands of pills in all different ways. On my first brand of pills (Marvelon) I put on weight, had 7 day uncomfortable periods and oily skin, on my second brand of pills (Cilest) I lost the extra weight, had comfortable 5 day periods and clear skin. They're all slightly different combinations of hormones and ingredients. Just get her to test out some other brands to see how well they work. Don't expect the change to come with her first period - let her get through the full 3 months in the box before deciding whether to change pill again or not. Her body will take some time to get used to the new pill.

I wasn't aware that birth control pills caused depression.. You need to get her to see her gp as soon as poss, something really doesn't sound right there so I see why your so worried!
But of cause this could all be down to PMS I kno I am a right bitch when I'm on.. It's not a nice thing to go through once a month I assure you, hormones are down right evil!
Get her to a gp first, go from there :)
Good luck, JD.x
