Sounds like the people your bro are talking about are aquaintances. Those are different from friends. And people that you hang out with in the pub aren't always real friends either if thats the only thing you do with them.
Real friends are few and far between and are people you can actually have a coffee with and talk about your woes or listen to theirs. Whether thats family or friends. Most people haven't got time to maintain those sort of friends, especially females with family and kids to look after, thats why they are few and far between.
Thats my 2 penneth worth anyway.
