Anyone with experience in the U.S. Navy?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Well I'm considering joining the U.S. Navy. I think what I'm worried about most is that I'm 25. I know it's not OLD but it feels like it is to just be getting into that line of work. I sometimes feel like I have a lack of fulfillment in my life I guess you could say and I feel like I could feel that way if I joined. Free education, training, serving my country, and travel. Is it just too good to be true?

Of course I've considered having to be on a ship for long periods of time and war, but none of that worries me. I'm just curious if anybody has been in the Navy in particular or another branch and how their experience was?

My daughter is eighteen and considering going into the US Navy. She is hesitant about joining because she has heard that women are treated poorly by the male population. She also heard that sexual harassment and even rape is an ongoing issue for the Navy. I would love to hear some positive feed back on the experiences women have had in the Navy.

Thanks,

Concerned Mother

Confuzzled012 agony auntLol sorry about that. I should have noticed. I've been in the Army since I was 17. Women cannot be in infantry and you're not looking for a lady.. so i guess.. cancel out pretty much everything i said.

Thanks for the responses so far. It was left out of the headline that I originally put, but I'm female...which also worries me a bit. I know, I know, women can do what men can, but it's a little intimidating going into something that's male dominated. So, thanks confuzzled, I'm not going to worry too much about a faithful lady (haha). I don't care to stay home though, I prefer to travel. I'm single and don't want to get married anytime soon, so might as well travel now while I can!

Confuzzled012 agony auntThe Army, hence the avatar.

Army reserve or National Guard sound like good options for you. You can stay at home and get a GI bill and get paid to go to college, have a life, girlfiend, friends, etc. but you still get the oppurtunity to deploy and serve. You would just have drill occasionally.

Certain parts of the Army are much more difficult so choose wisely. Something like infantry will likely leave you with PTSD, injuries, or let's face it.. death.

You should also consider, before you join any of these services, that it is extrememly difficult to find a loyal woman who will stand by your side no matter what. I'm not sure how I managed.. I'm lucky as hell.. just be careful.

my father was in the navy and he has described it as one of the best times in his life. he went on to become a navy seal. i think what he enjoyed most was the physical challenge and the fact that he got to travel around the world. acyually i think 25 is a great age to get involved in the military. you have reached a level of maturity that most people dont have when they first join up. Hope this helps. Good luck!

TasteofIndia agony auntSeems like you've got all the right reasons to join the Navy. My fella joined the Marines at nearly 27, and yeah he feels older, but he definitely feels wiser, secure and seasoned. Maturity accounts for a lot and creates the right state of mind for making such an enormous commitment and enduring such challenging situations.

Talk to lots of people, think a lot about it and you'll do what feels right to you. Good luck!!
