A reader, anonymous, writes (25 April 2008):

Caffeine is good for when you're trying to stay up late, and fizzy drinks. I've found coca cola is great. Energy drinks aren't particularly advisable though, as they can be quite addictive. I once knew a girl that was addicted, and all she drank was red bull with the occasional glass of water every few days. Seriously, it was ridiculous. But have you tried getting up earlier instead? Just getting up an hour earlier works for me, because (obviously it depends on the type of person you are but...) you're more refreshed in the morning. Good luck :]

BigSis agony auntThe problem is tho, Salvation, those energy drinks such as Red Bull aren't good for you, yes they may "give you wings" but can become highly addictive, read on...

There are concerns about the popularity of these drinks among young people. These beverages can cause youngsters to be hyperactive, fidgety or even rageful, and because the drinks are so small in size, people may be inclined to drink more than one at a time.

Most of us wouldn't really let our children drink two or three or even four cups of coffee, but children go to the store around the corner and find energy drinks.

Facts about energy drinks:

Most energy drinks contain caffeine, often about 80 mg per can (about the same as one cup of brewed coffee and more than the amount in two cans of Coca-Cola)...

...and while the amino acid is made naturally by the body, it's also a much-touted ingredient in so-called "energy drinks" such as Red Bull.

The finding is a surprise and opens the door to a better understanding of taurine's impact on the brain, the researchers in a report in an issue of the 'Journal of Neuroscience'.

"It's inclusion in these supplements is a little puzzling, because our research would suggest that instead of being a pick-me-up, the taurine actually would have more of a sedative effect on the brain," Dr. Harrison says.

Taurine, which the body produces on its own, is a sulfur-containing amino acid often marketed as an antioxidant, anti-anxiety treatment and a heartbeat regulator.

BigSis agony auntPlenty of fruit for energy, caffeine is a very good too, but not too much, it can keep you up for a while but you can also crash when it wears off. Try chewing gum, that helps.

Drink lots of liquids. The more you drink, the more you have to use the bathroom. It's really difficult to fall asleep if you have to go for a pee every ten minutes.

Don't eat a lot of food, and eat small portions regularly instead of one big meal. Big meals tend to make you feel tired and lazy. Since you will already be tired and lazy, you don't want to multiply the feeling by eating lots of food.

Don't wear your pyjamas. People put on their pj's tend to feel comfortable and your mind associates them with sleep. Wear something that you won't be able to fall asleep in. {Get yourself an armoured suit....just kidding}

Don't turn up the heating. Cold air will keep you awake, when your cold it is really hard to fall asleep. Warmth will get you in the mood for sleep, which is not what you want.

Another thing that will keep you stay awake is bright lights. Have you ever tried to fall asleep with the TV on? All the flashing lights tend to disrupt our sleepyness. If you dim your lights, it will just make it that much easier for you to nod off.

Take care and the best of luck with your studies.

Now who's got suggestions for me? I can't sleep at night.
