The best definition 0f an addiction that I have read was: When you know some thing is going to hurt you and those around you, and you still do it, then you are addicted. Addictions can be habits, as far as the meaning of the words. In general you can change a habit without outside help but an addiction needs help. I hope that helps.

A bad habit, is something like biting your nails, picking your nose etc.An addiction, is when you have a strong craving for something like nicotine, caffine, narcotics, something you believe you need when in truth you probably don't.
